Understanding the Hazards of Nitrogen in Confined Spaces: Key Takeaways from BP’s Training Yesterday, I attended an important training session on nitrogen hazards in confined spaces, held at the MQUR station. As we prepare to pressurize DEHYDRATOR & DESOLATOR vessels at our oil stations, it’s crucial to emphasize safety. In HVAC systems, we commonly use nitrogen to pressure test gas lines, making this training highly relevant to my work. The training, organized by BP&TEKFN, covered: 1-Hazards of Nitrogen – Nitrogen’s colorless and odorless nature poses hidden risks in confined spaces. 2-Asphyxiation – Displacement of oxygen can lead to suffocation. 3-CSB Case Study: Valero Refinery Accident – Highlighting the deadly consequences of improper nitrogen use. By following the safety guidelines from BP and the CSB, we can ensure safer nitrogen handling in both HVAC applications and industrial operations.

The Importance of Regular Water Testing for Closed Loop, Cooling Tower, and Steam Boiler Systems Consistent water testing is vital for maintaining the health and efficiency of closed loop, cooling tower, and steam boiler systems. Without regular monitoring, systems are prone to issues like corrosion, scaling, and biological growth, which can lead to equipment failure and costly repairs. At Guardian Chemicals, I don’t just supply chemicals—I provide my customers with all the tools and knowledge they need for effective water treatment. Each client receives a detailed water treatment manual that includes test procedures, log sheets, control charts, and a troubleshooting guide. On top of that, I ensure that laminated test procedures and control charts are available on-site for quick and easy reference. I also offer on-site training, where I walk customers through every step—explaining how to test, why testing is important, and how to adjust based on the results. This makes testing easy and manageable for everyone involved. Regular testing ensures your systems are running efficiently and helps catch potential issues early. With my support, you’ll have everything you need to keep your systems in top shape. Check out some examples of setups I’ve organized for my clients!

EPSC Learning Sheet October 2024 - Pressure Safety Valve installation This October 2024 EPSC Learning Sheet reminds us that Bonnet Vent in a balanced bellows process safety valve must be open, i.e. the shipping plug of the bonnet vent MUST remove before putting safety valve to service. To protect it from water ingress or plugging such as bugs entering, the vent hole is usually fitted with an elbow complete with bug screen, which is a common practice in instrument exhaust vents too. Indeed, the same concern was circulated in May 2013’s CCPS Beacon, “Pressure relief valve bonnets – to plug or not to plug?”. https://lnkd.in/gtnvNgQg To differentiate the balanced bellows pressure relief valves and that of the conventional ones at plant site, it would be best practice to have warning signs marked near to their respective bonnet vents. You may also refer to https://lnkd.in/gGav4RST on “Balanced Bellows vs. Conventional Pressure Safety Valves: Understanding the Differences and Advantages”.
