The brief for this project was to re-model and extend a character dwelling within a conservation area in South Wales. …. The design was developed to minimise any impact on the conservation area by creating new additions that were contemporary in nature but still respected the original character dwelling. The proposed single storey extension's fully glazed East and West facades create a sense of openness by establishing a visual connection with the site as a whole. .... The aim was to create a light filled, open plan living, kitchen and dining space at ground floor level with glazing opening onto the courtyard as well as the gardens. The second floor, master bedroom with balcony was designed to make the most of the far reaching views. .... The associated landscaping will allow easy access to the gardens, linking the outside to the inside seamlessly. .... We worked closely with the local planners and planning consultants Asbri Planning to secure planning on this scheme. .... When we first approached this site in Brent, our research uncovered that all buildings on this piece of land has taken the form of a warehouse for over 100 years. This led us to question: Rather than oppose, how could we best utilise this historic form for living? The result? Nine dwellings and a new commercial unit incorporated into a low-slung building that complements the rich, mixed character of the area. Light is drawn into the residences via a number of courtyards, rooflights and clerestory windows. Inside, traditional room arrangements are flipped upside down, with raised terraces that extend straight out of the living rooms. The internal and external walls align which dissolves the barriers inside and outside, creating a seamless spatial experience. A green roof adds to the sensation of living within a landscape while at the same time privacy is retained for all the occupants. In the city of Cape Town, within the Western Cape province of South Africa, a masterfully designed estate is tucked into the hillside. Designed to be a sanctuary of Architecture and Nature, the residence becomes a part of its natural environment seeking to blur the lines of where the home ends and the wilderness begins. Expansive green roofs with local native vegetation, provide views of the natural environment from most interior spaces. A cantilevered reflection pond extends off of one level of the home and offers expansive views of the forested region. The pond also works to increase biodiversity in the immediate region, while supporting aquatic vegetation that filter and clean the water. Green roofs act as an insulator for the interior spaces, helping to regulate temperatures yearround. The home is a stunning example of creative and thoughtful design, that puts the natural environment at the forefront of its conceptualization. **The site before the building came up Experience the transformation of Mayapott: From serene landscape to a stunning architectural marvel. This is one of the initial projects of the firm that, to this day, fetches us clients. Built as a private plantation bungalow, Mystic Mayappott started functioning as a three room resort in 2004. In 2021, it underwent a renovation, adding two more rooms. The site was unique in that it made one constantly mindful of the power of Nature. Our effort was merely to not diminish this experience with the design of our structure. But in order to create an architecture that’s subtle and merging, we had to come up with a design approach that was bold and unconventional. Because the architectural design process was strongly guided by the natural elements on site like the stream, the huge boulders, large trees etc., execution of the project had to take a non-traditional approach. Spaces and functions were accommodated within the boundaries already set by Nature. The plan of the spaces was drawn on site first and this was later transferred to the drawing board for detailing. Instead of cutting down Nature to accommodate the functions, we accepted the restraints and planned the functions around them. Due to this, we have rocks sticking out here and there inside the house, some rooms have rocks as walls, the house itself splits in three parts by the stream and the boulder; existing trees are accommodated in courtyards. Special attention is given to the planting palette so that the space does not feel ‘planted’.
