For those who know me, baring my soul isn’t something I usually do. But today, in the hope of raising awareness of the importance of increasing standards of workplace mental health, I will break this habit.
Mike and I had once lived together in Sydney for several years. He was a Psychoanalyst. He was always there for others in their times of need. Sadly, even with all of his years of training, tools and insights, Mike took his life after quietly struggling with his own mental health. Leaving behind loving parents, siblings and many friends.
Losing Mike has been a significant impact on my own mental health and more often than not, I am able to channel these feelings into purposeful action aimed at helping others. It is for this reason I partnered with Dr Suzy Green who is a Clinical Psychologist, a Coaching Psychologist with over 25 years of experience in the service of others. Suzy is also a dear friend and global thought leader in the area of wellbeing and performance science.
It still surprises me that even in the face of sharply rising rates of anxiety and depression, workplace mental health is frequently seen as ‘a nice to have’.
Last week Dr Suzy Green,Associate Professor Sean O'Connor and I, presented at the European Conference on Positive Psychology in Innsbruck, Austria.
The overwhelming view from those who attended in Innsbruck is the need for practitioners and senior leaders to take a more systems level approach to tackling workplace mental health.
The title of our presentation in Innsbruck was ‘Embedding Positive Psychology Science: The Potential Role of Organisational Operating Rhythms’.
The World Economic Forum video below with Kathleen M. Pike from Columbia University shares some high impact mental health trends and statistics, including the importance of having a clearly articulated workplace mental health plan.
To help leaders take a more systemic lens, we have created a thorough and affordable workplace diagnostic that helps senior leaders to evaluate their organisational rhythms, including wellbeing, productivity and engagement. We’d love to collaborate with you on creating a productive, thriving workplace and leadership culture 😊
