Did you know? 🤔 Nigeria is one of the largest producers of cassava globally with over 60 million tonnes produced in 2024 (World Population Review, 2024). Cassava is a major source of various delicacies in various cultures in Nigeria such as Garri, fufu, African salad, Dan wake, Amala among others. On today’s episode of #FridayFarmFeature we are highlighting a thriving cassava farm in Iporo community. We had previously shared highlights on freshly harvested cassava but today we would be discussing its plantation. Cassava is a tropical root crop with starchy roots and planted in almost all parts of Nigeria. Cassava plants are composed of water and carbohydrates which are usually harvested between seven to twelve months depending on its species and farming practices. Cassava is easy to cultivate and requires low agricultural input. What food is produced with cassava in your tribe? 😀 Comment below let’s engage.🤗 #CassavaFarming #FridayFarmFeature #NigerianAgriculture #EERC #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #FAO

According to the National Bureau of Statistics Nigeria, here's the staggering increase in the prices of essential food items across various states: 💡Akwa Ibom: Tomatoes now sell for N1,549 per 1kg. 💡Niger State: Rice is priced as high as N1,670 per 1kg. 💡Nassarawa: Beans sell for up to N1,500 per kg. 💡Bayelsa: A single tuber of yam now costs N1,453. Consider this against the current minimum wage set at N30,000. Let's paint a picture of how a family of four copes with these soaring food prices. It's time for a critical examination of the factors driving food inflation and to address them at their core. This isn't just about farmers; it's about ensuring every household can afford a decent meal. We can start this by investing in sustainable agriculture, which cuts down on how much it costs to grow crops. It also makes us rely less on importation and prioritizing locally sourced materials. Making our farming infrastructure strong will also help farmers grow more crops and reduce scarcity, reducing food prices. We've taken the first steps by embracing sustainable farming practices to cultivate crops on our farm while exporting our farm produce internationally. Despite owning four hectares of land, Aliyu Sani, a small-scale #fruits and #vegetable #farmer in Nigeria, faced a significant challenge - accessing quality farm inputs for his farming activities. Limited by high costs of seeds and other farm inputs, Aliyu could only cultivate less than a hectare of his land. The introduction of the Farmers’ Inputs and Delivery and Investment Scheme (FIDIS), under the Acting Now project, offered a timely solution to his problem. The scheme offered Aliyu and other farmers the opportunity to procure quality seeds upfront, with repayment delayed until after harvest helping them surmount the biggest barrier to improving production. Acting Now is funded by Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken (Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs). FIDIS is farmers solution considering the current challenge of limited access to finance by small holder farmers with particular emphasis on vegetable farmers in Nigeria. FIDIS has eliminated or broken the bottlenecks of bureaucracy of accessing funds for farm inputs from deposit money banks and MFIs. With Solidaridad's FIDIS, smallholder farmers have timely and unhindered access to finance to purchase farm inputs at the right time and competitive prices which enables them plan their vegetable farming business for higher yield, income and improved livelihoods. FIDIS places more emphasis on women and youth farmers in recognition of their vulnerability in the vegetable production system. A scale up of FIDIS can address food insecurity situation in Nigeria and the sub-Saharan region. Indeed Solidaridad is the real farmers friend. 'No Mago mago'

“Human Security don Enter crop Calendar” IBRO😎, once a LAGGARD in northern Nigeria uses farmers save seeds(grains) for cultivation. Trust me, he had low yields and as usual was classified as a smallholder farmer. IBRO needed help because what he was contributing to the country’s GDP was low. Iya’adiyat need his produce to sell amala, and Tuwo in her restaurant, that is just one of the many who needs IBRO on his farm year in and out to cultivate, get high yields and sell. Never forget that breeders took it upon themselves to cross and cross just to get a VARIETY that could solve a need for IBRO. How about the Agricultural Extension agents who brought awareness on latest Technology to IBRO, that led to him becoming an Early Adopter and the list continues, all coming together to constitute a name called VALUE CHAIN Now here’s the pain, IF IBRO cannot go to his farm to provide the necessary management to his crop because of HUMAN INSECURITY what then becomes of FOOD SECURITY? Seed purity, plant uniformity, high yield, adoption rate, more money in the account is possible if IBRO can go to his farm without Hindrance by the one who needs his crop to feed. Food security is availability, accessibility, utilization, affordability and quality of food, does that sound like Human Security makes up 98-100% of that definition? What’s your thoughts? #Humansecurityinagriculture #Echiventures #GlowingFarmer
