A note from author-illustrator JoAnna Lapati— During the nineteenth century, race, gender, and class were the determining factors for exclusion. Women were excluded from the public sphere, without having the right to vote or the ability to hold public office. Instead, women were relegated to the home with the expectations of raising a family. So what if a woman’s will is different from the social norms of her time? Why is inclusion important today? To include is to acknowledge one’s differences, and by learning, we become more accepting. In the military, a salute is a form of respect. It is a reciprocated gesture from an officer. It is also an acknowledgement. On the cover of Guts For Glory: The Civil War Soldier Rosetta Wakeman, we see a soldier offering a salute to the reader, as a member of society. It is through Rosetta’s character that the reader acknowledges her differences. We learn about Rosetta's determination, despite her small frame at 5-feet tall, and the fact that she was a young woman with the ability to “hold her own” and “stand her ground” with courage while supporting her family and country. We understand why Rosetta went to the extreme lengths of concealing her gender. From concept to completion, fueled by inspiration, I’m excited to finally share Guts For Glory with young readers during Women’s History Month and on International Women’s Day. Rosetta Wakeman was one of the many extraordinary women in history who had the guts to fight the fight for the inclusion of women across the globe. https://lnkd.in/gD_EASuT #internationalwomensday #inspireinclusion #inspire #womenshistory #womeninhistory #kidlit #kidlitart #picturebooks #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #childrensbookshelf #booksforkids

On this 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, I celebrate the power that girls (ladies) hold to shape the future. This year's theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” is a reminder that every girl, whether in our homes, schools, or communities, has the potential to be a force of change. As women, mothers, and mentors, we know the importance of nurturing this vision, empowering girls to dream big and supporting them in becoming the incredible women they are destined to be. Today is the perfect time to celebrate not only ourselves as women but the young girls in our lives—our daughters, sisters, and friends. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐲: 1. Remind a girl of her uniqueness – Take a moment to tell her how amazing and powerful she is. Every girl should be reminded of her potential to become anything she dreams of. 2. Watch a superhero-themed movie together – Whether it’s your daughter, sister, or a close friend, enjoy a movie that celebrates strong female characters. Here are a few recommendations: Hidden Figures: The story of three African-American women who played pivotal roles in NASA's space race. I Am Greta: A documentary on climate activist Greta Thunberg and her fight for our planet. Here I Am: A touching narrative of resilience across three generations of Aboriginal women. Black Panther Part 2: A celebration of courage and leadership. 3. Gift a powerful book – such as Adebola Williams' African Power Girls or Mina’s Diaries by OMOBOLA Olaribigbe to inspire and motivate the girls in your life. 4. Give a small keepsake – A thoughtful token that symbolizes strength or a personal bond can be cherished for years to come. 5. Spend quality time being playful – Sometimes the best connections are made in simple moments of laughter and playfulness. Be silly, be present, and create a memory that counts. Today is about the bonds we create and the confidence we instill in our girls. Don't forget that though you are all grown and doing big things, deep inside, you are also a girl, make sure you enjoy the day. Men, please celebrate the girls and ladies in your circle. Happy International Day of the Girl Child.👧🎀 #educatorsmakingadifference #thoughtleader #Linkedintopvoice #educationalleadership #education #parentingtips #girlsday #idgc

"As a society, we have to do more to empower young women beyond giving them education and schooling. I believe we have to also find practical and innovative ways to inspire them to be boldly ambitious and overly audacious to pursue their big dreams. Most importantly we need to show these young ladies everyday examples of successful women in their local communities not just the women they see only on TV or social media. Surely it is not just about the fame and power nor is it just about the popularity and affluence. We need more successful women who are not only pacesetters in their careers but also powerful and positive role models in the society from whom the young ladies can emulate and pick up proper values. Yes we are all not perfect but surely we need to get more examples of role models who are near perfect."-John Appiah, 2023 (CEO A-League Consult & President African Chamber For Youth Development) #womenempowement

Captivating: All Women Are Called to Mother As large as the role is that our mothers play, the word mother is more powerful when used as a verb than as a noun. All women are not mothers, but all women are called to mother. To mother is to nurture, to train, to educate, to rear. As daughters of Eve, all women are uniquely gifted to help others in their lives become more of who they truly are — to encourage, nurture, and mother them toward their true selves. https://lnkd.in/dcwkExDS

This is a must read at the top of your list for #womenshistorymonth. Another brilliantly urgent and nuanced article by Emerald Anderson-Ford.
Traveling Philosopher, Writer, and Abolitionist co-Founder of @LiberationNexusLab Founder and Owner of CRED (Communities Reaching for Equity and Diversity)
Another Monday, another column post for #BlackinNH in the Manchester Ink Link. What does intersectional advocacy and justice mean during #womanshistorymonth 2024? If your women's history month celebrations and learning opportunities don't have mention of our trans siblings, our Palestinian sisters, and don't continue to name the insidious ways in which white dominant culture fractures the ideals of 'sisterhood'- then your women's history month needs to be more intersectional. #intersectionality #womenshistorymonth2024

🌍 The WIRE_EU project is #reshaping our understanding of #history! By focusing on the stories of #women involved in #resistance movements across #Europe, it is bringing forward the #narratives that have been silenced for too long. 💪 Why is it important? It highlights the #keyrole women have played in shaping modern European history, showing their #bravery and #resilience. The #WIREProject fills a gap in historical #research and ensures that these stories are preserved and shared with the world. 🎯 What's the goal? To foster #education, #collaboration, and public #awareness to promote a more #inclusive and complete understanding of history. The project paves the way for #futuregenerations to learn about the critical #contributions of women. ♀ Learn more about this initiative: https://webs.uab.cat/wire/
