The Holidays are upon us, and many workplaces are starting their Holiday Party Planning. They are decorating, planning Secret Santa or Yankee Swap events, thinking about festive foods and otherwise getting into the Holiday Spirit. But what about your Team Members who don't celebrate Christmas? People like me, who celebrate Hannukah? Or Eid? Or Kwanzaa? Or the many other Festivals which occur between American Thanksgiving and the middle of January? Or the Team Members who observe Christmas, but don't celebrate it in the same way? Are your Holiday Festivities inclusive of their way of Observance and/or Celebration? Or is your company leaning heavily into the Christian or Secular Christmas Celebrations? This is a great opportunity for everyone to learn about other Holidays, and their traditions. Inclusion is growth and making your Team stronger. The above referenced lyrics and song come from the musical Mame: In this particular scene, Mame wants to lift her spirits, so she starts handing out Christmas presents to everyone. Agnes then blurts out, "The paper says there are 16 shopping days left!" Basically saying, "Hey, it's way too early for Christmas cheer!" So July is REALLY too early! Right? The origin of "Christmas in July" is not entirely clear, but it is generally believed to have started as a marketing gimmick. One widely cited instance is a 1933 summer camp event at Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, where the camp held a "Christmas in July" celebration complete with a tree, gifts, and Santa Claus. The concept gained further popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, partly due to promotions by retailers looking to boost summer sales. The idea was to give people a taste of the Christmas spirit and encourage early holiday shopping. The retail and consumer factions have definitely claimed “Christmas in July” commercially, but the “Christmas Cheer” concept is still up for grabs… …and it’s free. Rough transitions, difficult quarters, slow development, job changes, high quotas, limited budgets… This month isn’t necessarily different than many months lately— It has been a tough few years in our industry and others. So this July, let’s claim the cheer how we can: Encourage each other, celebrate wins (even small ones), share knowledge and insight, be kind. What do you truly desire for Christmas? Deep down. It may not be the thing that you have been hinting about. It may not be the thing that you have been eyeing up recently. Perhaps it is something that you unconsciously speak out loud, through your body language or by the things you don’t say. It can be the thing that only your partner or best friend knows, or perhaps you bury it so deeply that you aren’t even aware of it. Do you secretly yearn to be listened to, acknowledged, be given an amazing opportunity, feel a sense of freedom from a burden, to be treated differently, to go for something or someone you feel is out of your reach, or to be and act like your true self? Christmas is coming. You may be busy organising people and presents right now. What would next year feel like if you gave yourself the Christmas gift that no one else will give you? What would happen if you gave it with love and appreciation? What impact would that have on your way you live your life and feel about it? Would it also improve the lives of those around you?

This time next week, many of us will be with our families or loved ones, celebrating Christmas. Or perhaps, for those who don’t celebrate, it’s simply time spent slowing down, reflecting, and reconnecting. As someone who does celebrate Christmas, particularly with 2 children (!) - I've been thinking a LOT about gifts—about presents and presence—and which matters more? The truth is, the most meaningful gift we can offer anyone is our presence: being fully there, listening, noticing, and caring. In a world that so often pulls our attention in a thousand directions, the simple act of showing up—really showing up—is priceless. Whether we celebrate Christmas or not, the gift of presence is universal. It’s a gift we can give freely to our families, our teams, our colleagues, and ourselves. It’s about the moments we create when we’re fully engaged, the conversations that matter, and the connections we nurture. As we near the end of the year, I invite you to pause and ask: "Where can I offer the gift of my presence?" For those you love. For the people you lead. For yourself. After all, the moments where we are truly present are the ones that leave a lasting impact. What a magical time Christmas is? It's the only thing that each year brings out the community spirit in all of us. We all buy into the dream of goodwill to all men, be a little nicer, a little more patient, more generous and that good feeling isn't reserved for Christmas Day, far from it. As soon as lights and decorations go up, we're in the mood. So we spend a month spreading Christmas cheer and then come the big day, we all shut our doors to the world outside and hold our family and friends within. How must that feel if you don't have family and friends? I doubt you'd have enjoyed the build up, more like dreaded it, as the climax is the starkest reminder of all, how alone you are. So is Christmas Day celebrated in the wrong way perhaps? There is so much narrative that 'it's the one time to spend with family and friends' but is it? That's a choice for most of us, I would have thought. Summer holidays are marketed the same way now as is Easter. Obviously there are families and friends that are logistically challenged to meet more than once a year but then nobody travels hundreds or thousands of miles for one day.....do they? The current Christmas Day celebrations could, in theory, take place on the 24th, 26th, 27th, etc. What if we made Christmas Day the truest and most beautiful depiction of goodwill and opened our doors and hearts and made a community day; one big celebration in each town, village, street, whatever....but where everyone is welcome, everyone feels included and then everyone could genuinely look forward to Christmas Day. Wouldn't that be real Christmas Spirit; what it was always meant to be? Maybe I'm dreaming but that won't stop me trying to make it happen. #2 CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME ... how it really becomes Christmas...   If we think about what makes a present THE perfect one, it is rather easy .. It needs to FIT THE PEOPLE recieving it. It needs to come at THE RIGHT TIME. It needs to ANSWER WISHES (hidden or not). And it needs to come FROM THE HEART.   So I decided long ago to ask my colleagues what they think, what they feel and what would make them smile.  And I implemented it, in small groups. Using my budget, but sometimes adding my own if the year was a special one. The result are many ways to celeberate the end of the year and what we have achieved; or just the fact that things were OK in difficult times; or even the simple fact that we want so spend some shared time.   And if soemones chooses not to participate, I fully understand, because I am a bit of a Grinch myself, Even if hopefully less hairy and not as green...
