Look for this new movement to catch-on for home design and changes to make a home more resistive to fire, floods and wind damage. These improvements can also make homes more energy efficient. People existing in Hurricane prone states may to make improvements for flood prevention and wind damage. Those in fire prone areas will have to look at fire resistant building materials. Did anyone ever hear of WUI Windows? “Wildland urban fire interface” windows are designed to resist high heat for 20 minutes before breaking. Combine new windows with non-wood concrete siding material which can resist high-heat for up-to 1 hour and you have a home more resistive to fire damage. In our market, there are homes which are built along the shore of the Bay which are subject to rising sea levels and storm surge. A local city though restricts any new home foundation from being built more than 4 feet above FEMA’s flood levels. In the aftermath of a flood, quick action is crucial. Here’s a look at the first steps we took to clean out and restore these buildings after Hurricane Helene. Mud, furniture, and debris were cleared out, followed by removing any water-damaged carpets. Once the space is clean, drying out the structure becomes a priority. At this stage, active dehumidification rental dehumidifiers play a key role in the recovery process. By removing excess moisture from walls, floors, and other materials that have absorbed water, these units help prevent mold growth and further structural damage. Reflecting on my evacuation from New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina, I remember the uncertainty and fear. Returning a year later, the devastation was heartbreaking, but the resilience of the community was inspiring. My thoughts are with those in Florida now facing evacuations – it’s a difficult and uncertain time. As architects and builders, we’re at a critical crossroads. Construction is responsible for 39% of global emissions, and if we don’t reduce that impact, communities will continue to suffer from increasingly severe climate events. We must prioritize sustainable, low-impact design to create resilient communities that can thrive in the face of these challenges. Why Are Trees Left Standing After Wildfires Destroy Homes? 🌲🔥 Many of you have wondered why trees often remain standing after a wildfire, even when nearby houses and structures are destroyed. The answer lies in the difference between wildfires and conflagrations. Wildfire vs. Conflagration In a wildfire, flames often move as a front, consuming vegetation but not always spreading to everything in their path. Conflagrations, on the other hand, occur when one structure catches fire and spreads through flammable connections, like wood fences, igniting house after house. This also occurs more easily due to the intense heat produced by a structure fire coupled with the close proximity of structures. Why Trees Survive: Some trees have natural adaptation to withstand fire. Thick Bark: Acts as a heat shield, protecting the inner layers. Natural Shape: Sheds embers and debris, reducing ignition risk. Moisture Content: Higher moisture content than older building materials slows the spread of fire. While trees may still be singed, they are often less flammable than structures. Why Homes Are More Vulnerable: Houses are built with materials and features that make them prone to ignition: Combustible Materials: Wood siding and roofing can ignite quickly, especially from nearby fires. Openings & Vents: Embers can enter and spark fires inside, even from a distance. Heat Traps: Flat surfaces and air currents can intensify flames once they reach the interior. Removing flammable items within the first five feet (Zone 0) of a home creates a defensible space, helping to break the pathway for wildfire spread and reducing the risk of flames reaching structures. Fire season is year-round in California, but the time we have the most Santa Ana wind events is coming. This article features some tips to prepare your home. If you search online for fire hazard severity zones you will be able to enter your address and see where the most severe areas near your address are. In the last 20 years, most wildfires in California have burned in non-conifer ecosystems (64% of the acreage) such as shrublands in Southern California. Over five million hectares have burned in the last 20 years, which is double the area burned in the previous two decades.
