𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 Let me take you back to prehistoric times, 10,000 years ago. You and your family are hungry, and you really fancy Wild Boar for tea. You and some others go on a hunt, looking for a Wild Boar. You look for a few hours, and have no success. You are now very hungry, and your family needs to be fed. So you find something else to eat, maybe some fruits or roots, gather enough for tea, and head back to the family with your harvest. Sounds like common sense, yes? The main need was to satisfy the appetites of the family, keeping them fed and staving off their hunger. No sign of a wild boar, so find something else to eat. Simple. And yet, in modern life, how would a large organisation tackle this challenge? If the objective was to hunt a wild boar, and no wild boar was found, the organisational temptation is to set up a ‘Wild Boar’ committee. This committee will meet to discuss the challenges faced in hunting Wild Boar, will identify strategies and tactics that will help with hunting Wild Boar, and will develop an action plan designed to improve the chances of hunting Wild Boar by an estimated 10%. Yet if prehistoric families had done this, they would have starved to death. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 ‘𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼’ 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁. If you are in this situation, you can ask, ‘so what are the good reasons for doing this?’. You can then follow up with, ‘what other good reasons do we have?’ as many times as you like so that you get a full picture of the difference the activity will make. One you know the reasons for doing something (in this case to feed my family, help them sleep, help them grow, help them have energy to work etc) then it is easy to see the different ways you can deliver these reasons. You will also have noticeable differences to watch out for, and this will help you if your first course of action isn’t giving you what you want. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 is conversational common sense for a complex modern world. Next time you are tempted to set up a committee to investigate a problem, just ask yourself what reasons you have for wanting this, and what difference you will notice when the problem has reduced or gone away. You might just find easier ways to satisfy your hunger pangs than just hunting the Wild Boar. Ready to explore these simpler solutions?
