🌍 Amazon Carbon + eGreen: Conserving the Peruvian Amazon with innovation, technology and sustainability 🌱. Amazon Carbon is a project that changes the paradigm of the logging business and seeks to preserve 500,000 hectares of the Peruvian Amazon while directly benefiting some 50 local communities. These communities, who have logging rights on up to 5% of their land, face the reality that logging is an increasingly unprofitable and restricted business, and that soil conservation and regeneration is the future. 🤩 What makes Amazon Carbon unique? Instead of logging, communities have decided to protect their land and waive their logging rights. This commitment not only prevents deforestation, but allows existing biomass to power the forest and sequester more carbon. In return, communities receive: ✅ Income from carbon credits. ✅ Training to develop sustainable products without damaging the forest. 📡 🛜 The role of eGreen and dMRV technology: eGreen drives this project with advanced technologies, implementing a Digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system that ensures transparency and accuracy in real time. This includes: 🛰️ Satellite surveys to establish an initial baseline. 🛜 On-the-ground sensors that collect data in real time. 📈 Continuous and transparent monitoring to assess the impact and evolution of each property. 💡The use of dMRV will enable the generation of reliable data to support carbon reductions and avoid double counting, ensuring the credibility of carbon credits issued. 🎯 Projected environmental impact: 1️⃣ Initial reduction from avoided deforestation: over 3,000,000 tons of CO₂e avoided approx. on 25,000 hectares protected. 2️⃣ Additional carbon sequestration in the conserved forest: Approximately 1,500,000 tons of CO₂e per year due to the natural growth and regeneration of the 500,000 hectares. 📊 Innovative gamification model: eGreen will also implement a gamification system that will allow communities to visualize the performance of their estates on interactive dashboards, comparing results with others. This encourages collaboration, transparency and continuous improvement. 🌟 Accreditation and standards: Amazon Carbon will be certified as an AFOLU project under the ICROA standard by Biocarbon, guaranteeing the quality and impact of carbon reductions. This model not only protects biodiversity, but transforms challenges into opportunities, empowering communities to lead a more sustainable future. 💪 🌎 🌱 Together we can conserve the Amazon and combat climate change! #AmazonCarbon #Sustainability #Conservation #AFOLU #CarbonCredits #dMRV #Gamification #Innovation #PositiveImpact #SustainableTechnology.

Hello, AI Enthusiasts! 🌍 As we face the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, AI could also be a powerful tool to bring about the best solutions to tackle polution. By integrating AI into the preservation of our planet, we can make a real difference: promoting rainfall, cutting down pollution, and helping nature thrive. 1. AI-Driven Rain Enhancement: AI could find the means to promote rainfall in areas where it's desperately needed. By analyzing weather patterns, AI can help optimize cloud seeding, making it more effective in drought-stricken regions. This leads to better water management and healthier ecosystems. With water being the number one fuel for all life on Earth, it's important that we're not deprived from this natural resource. 2. Tackling Pollution with AI: AI would be key in monitoring the sources and levels of pollution. With smart sensors keeping track of air and water quality in real time, we can take action to reduce pollution for good. Be it finding cleaner routes for transport or improving industrial practices, the quality of the air would skyrocket, knowing that the better the quality of the air, the healthier our lungs will be. 3. Smart Reforestation 🌱: Reforestation is crucial, and AI can help us do it smarter. By analyzing where trees will grow best, taking into account soil, climate, and local wildlife, AI can guide reforestation efforts. Drones and automated systems could be used for this purpose, planting and nurturing trees efficiently, helping forests recover faster and adapting the soil to facilitate reforestation. 4. Sustainable Farming: We all know the importance of cultivating vegetables that possess the properties four our health, AI could also improve the way we farm. By understanding soil health, weather, and crop needs, AI can suggest farming methods that use less water, fewer pesticides, and keep the soil rich. This means more sustainable food production that cares for the planet. 5. Better Waste Management: Managing waste is also important. AI can sort and recycle materials more effectively, reducing what ends up in landfills and cutting down pollution. Plus, by analyzing patterns, AI can help prevent illegal dumping, keeping our communities cleaner. 6. Raising Environmental Awareness: AI isn’t just about tech—it’s also about education. It can create personalized content and virtual experiences that showcase the possible consequences of poor choices and the impact to the environment. By spreading awareness and encouraging greener habits, AI will make sure we always consider our environment four our own sake. AI offers us a chance to live in a healthier planet, using technology to protect and restore our environment. By embracing AI in our everyday efforts, we can create a future where both people and the planet thrive together. #AI #AIValue #LeadingAIForTheFuture #Ecosystem #AISustainability

Can poop save the planet? 🤔 Well, in Silicon Valley, it's not just a punchline—it's a multimillion-dollar climate solution. Big players are teaming up with startup Vaulted Deep, paying $58.3 million, to pump organic waste underground. The deal was brokered by Frontier Climate, a coalition launched in 2022 by Stripe, Alphabet, Meta, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability. But why are tech giants getting their hands dirty with sewage and manure? Vaulted Deep's technology, rooted in decades-old methods used for oil and gas fracking cleanup, gives them an edge. But instead of sludge, they're tackling carbon-rich waste, aiming to sequester CO2 underground. They plan to sequester 152,480 tons of carbon dioxide by 2027 as part of the deal (That equates to 36,000 gas cars off the road for a year). Is this greenwashing, or a silver bullet? Critics warn of cost, the need for rigorous carbon accounting, and potential environmental trade-offs - i.e. emission prevention versus carbon removal. #decarbonization

Yesterday, Ian Biggs raised the great reminder about the need to think about circularity when shifting to renewable energy and low/no carbon technologies. First and foremost, it’s important to keep in mind that, though things like solar panels, wind turbines and batteries may require minerals and rare earths in their manufacture, they do not ‘use up’ those resources. For our world to be truly sustainable, however, we do need to make sure that these items can be easily, cost-effectively and energy-efficiently recycled at the end of their lives. Good technologies already exist to do this – but there is also a huge amount that can be done in design to make recycling easier. For example, most traditional cars are made in manner which makes extracting and recycling all the metals and other materials contained in them unnecessarily complicated and challenging. I heard Paul Smith give a fantastic talk on exact this subject in London about a year ago and wish I could find a recording of it to share. In contrast to the above, burning fossil fuels uses up the chemicals involved – and indeed the volume of fossil fuels used is enormously larger than the volume of eg lithium used in batteries. For those interested in these topics, there are many great resources to draw on, developed by people who have spent decades building knowledge and understanding of the various challenges. One is the Ellen Macarthur Institute. Another is Environmental Working Group (www.EWG.org). There are many others, depending on the particular area on which you’re focused. Care is needed to make sure you get input from people who have deep technical knowledge and practical commercial perspective in the relevant field. Both I and the wider Pottinger team see new examples almost every day, so don't hesitate to drop us a line if you want to know more. And that’s the big lesson for everyone contemplating how to improve their organisation’s environmental performance and social impact. More or less whatever you are considering, there will be examples of how to implement measures in practice that are tried and tested, and work – both in an impact sense and in a commercial sense too. So order a coffee and your favourite 'pastel', and seek out a friendly collaborator! #Impact #Teamwork #Sustainability #Pastel #portugal
