The Ministry of Equipment and Water in Morocco (MEW), is about to convert three buildings belonging to the MEW into water-efficient buildings.
Following the WES Training held in April 2024, WES organised a hybrid format meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on October 3, 2024 to present the Public Building Audit Guide that will serve as a basic document for any public service wishing to conduct a water audit.
The useful results and conclusions of the activity were discussed with the counterpart team of the Ministry of Equipment and Water and Public Services. The recommendations were taken into account for implementing the water-efficient buildings in question.
Meanwhile, the awareness-raising initiative for the dissemination of best practices in water use efficiency and water demand management among public users is in the priorities of the Ministry.

Saudi Arabia’s National Water Strategy (NWS)
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has recently unveiled its National Water Strategy (NWS), a comprehensive framework designed to ensure sustainable water management in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
The NWS is a pivotal component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, reflecting the nation’s commitment to preserving water resources, protecting the environment, and delivering high-quality services. The strategy emphasizes integrated water resources management, efficient water consumption, and the development of sustainable infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the population.
In December 2024, Saudi Arabia assumed the presidency of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This leadership role underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to addressing global environmental challenges, particularly those related to land degradation, desertification, and drought.
During COP16, Saudi Arabia launched the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, committing $150 million to enhance global drought resilience. This initiative aims to promote proactive drought management strategies, support vulnerable communities, and foster international collaboration to mitigate the impacts of drought worldwide.
Saudi Arabia’s experience in achieving SDG 6 initiatives offers valuable insights for the global community. The Kingdom has made significant investments in water infrastructure, allocating $80 billion for water projects in the coming years to ensure universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water. Additionally, efforts are underway to increase the population’s access to sanitation services, with a target coverage exceeding 95% by 2030.
The National Water Strategy also focuses on improving water demand management in agriculture, a sector that accounts for a substantial portion of water consumption. By implementing efficient irrigation techniques and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance water use efficiency and reduce wastage.
Furthermore, the Kingdom has established the National Water Efficiency and Conservation Center to spearhead initiatives aimed at promoting water conservation and raising public awareness about the importance of sustainable water use.
Saudi Arabia’s proactive approach to water management and its leadership role in international environmental forums demonstrate a steadfast commitment to sustainable development. By sharing its experiences and fostering global partnerships, the Kingdom contributes significantly to the collective efforts in achieving SDG 6 and ensuring a sustainable future for all.

I am excited to share that I successfully attended the Regional Training "Water in Emergencies" for 2024.
Due to the importance of exchanging experiences and strengthening the readiness of the National Societies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to respond to emergency WASH crises in their own countries. This regional training was held in Syria in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC and hosted by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
The training included 40 participants from the water teams of the SARC, ICRC, IFRC along with several MENA NSs from (Iraq, Palestine, Yamen, Egypt, Morocco and Libya) which is becoming increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards, coupled with internal and international conflicts that threaten the availability, delivery, and operation of critical infrastructure such as water and sanitation systems.
The training lasted for six days and employed a variety of training methods, most of which were practical simulations of emergency responses. The topics covered included 23 key areas of WASH, focusing on the most important aspects related to water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion.
The training provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge, visions, and lessons learned between NSs in the MENA region, aiming to deliver more comprehensive WASH responses.
