Exploring Private Sector Efficiency and Solution for Public Sector Problems - Focusing on Enterprise Design Solutions for Healthcare Sector - Bright Chimezie Irem ✍️, Fellow Mandela Washington Fellowship , U.S. Department of State | Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy, #ExchangeAlumni - Alumni Affairs - State Dept. Recently, I had the duty of moderating an enlightening session that brought together a diverse group of professionals and experts. The theme was centered around "Private Sector Solutions for Public Sector Problems," with a special focus on the healthcare sector. Our discussion kicked off by acknowledging the critical challenges facing the public healthcare system and the potential of private sector innovations to address these issues. The session looked into various successful models where private enterprises have introduced efficiency, technology, and innovation to enhance public health services. Key highlights during my session included the role of digital technology in streamlining healthcare delivery and making it more patient-centric. I led my session into examining case studies demonstrating the effective use of simple innovative solutions to fix market frictions in our emerging health market. such innovations: telemedicine, electronic health records, and mobile health applications in improving access and outcomes in healthcare. The conversation also covered the importance of data in informing policy decisions and improving service delivery. We shared (enterprise) insights on how leveraging big data and analytics can lead to better health outcomes and more efficient use of resources. A recurring theme in our discussion was the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable improvements in the healthcare system. The session emphasized that such partnerships could lead to innovative (enterprise) solutions that address the complex challenges of public healthcare. As we wrapped up, it was clear that there is a strong appetite for continued dialogue and action on harnessing private sector solutions to improve public healthcare. 💡 Digital Health Term Series Digital Health Maturity Model ✅ Like all healthcare interventions, digital health technologies need to be rigorously evaluated to ensure they achieve improved health and care. ✅ Digital maturity is the extent to which digital systems are leveraged for high quality healthcare . "Digital health maturity models are structured evaluations which allow healthcare organizations to document current digital state and develop roadmaps for improving patient care, health outcomes and health equity" Countries need to determine their level of digital health capability maturity to assess and mobilize their knowledge, skills, and resources to systematically develop, implement, evaluate, scale up and maintain large-scale implementations of standards-based interoperable digital health tools. USAID has released its Digital Health Position Paper for 2024-2029, offering valuable insights for the future of global health. 🌍 This document outlines USAID's strategic vision for investments and activities in digital health for 2024-2029, aimed at advancing global health through digital technologies. It provides a framework for USAID's approach to supporting partner countries in developing integrated, sustainable, and equitable digital health systems, emphasizing the importance of standards, interoperability, and country-led governance in the digital transformation of health sectors globally. 🔑 The paper is a reaffirmation of the importance and rapid evolution of digital health, the definition of which has been further elaborated: “Digital health is the systematic application of information and communications technologies, computer science, and data to support informed decision-making by individuals, the health workforce, and health institutions for strengthened resilience and improved health and wellness for all. The field of digital health, which is a professionalized subdomain of global health, includes an array of digital technology-based disciplines, including the application of big data, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital public infrastructure, as well as areas of specialization alternatively referred to as eHealth, mHealth, medical informatics, health informatics, health information systems, telemedicine, and telehealth. Digital health can support multiple aspects of health systems, including health information systems, health system financing, health workforce, leadership and governance, service delivery, and medical products, vaccines, and technologies." 💡 Importantly, it reaffirms that the main challenges in digital health are not technical, recognizes digital access and literacy as "digital determinants of health" and emphasizes the importance of equity in the digital health transformation. It also highlights the need for deliberate efforts to promote inclusion, accessibility, and safeguards for all users, especially vulnerable populations. 📚 The paper highly recommends professionals in global health, digital health, and international development to review this comprehensive document.
