Spot on from Jake. As a team, we've filled six General Counsel / Head of Legal roles this year. On five out of six occasions, the successful candidate has been someone we've worked with for 6 months or more. Four out of those six roles weren't advertised anywhere, and Beacon Legal was the only recruitment firm managing the brief. This tells me two things: 1) As a senior in-house lawyer, it's important that you build a good relationship with a specialist recruiter who understands the market and gets briefed on these senior, specialist 'off-market' roles. The whole process takes time (sometimes 12 months or more). If you're only looking on LinkedIn or Seek when job searching, you're missing out on hearing about relevant opportunities, and the process takes even longer. Plain and simple. 2) If you're a company looking to hire a senior lawyer, you need to be engaging a specialist LEGAL recruiter. Not an 'executive search firm' who can't spell 'General Counsel' correctly on their website. We have extensive relationships with senior lawyers who rely on us to brief them on suitable opportunities, and most of those lawyers aren't actively looking on job boards. If you want the best candidate for your role, you need to engage a specialist legal recruiter. It's a no-brainer.
The senior level roles are out there... You just have to be patient and build the right relationships. I've recently placed a Head of Legal into a global renewable energy giant and a General Counsel into a leading national construction business. Both lawyers were people that I've worked with for the past 6-18 months that appreciated the level of roles they were looking for wouldn't come up every day. It is much more about building a long-term relationship so when the ideal role does become available I'll know exactly who to call. #legalrecruitment #beaconlegal

The Critical Role of Legal Expertise in Driving Success for Energy Companies ⚖️ Energy Lawyers: The Backbone of Effective Energy Operations ⚖️ In today’s complex energy landscape, lawyers specializing in the energy sector play a vital role in a company's success. Their expertise goes beyond traditional legal tasks, influencing operational efficiency, compliance, and even long-term strategy. Here’s how energy lawyers drive real impact for energy companies: 1. Navigating Regulatory Complexity Energy companies must comply with a myriad of regulations at both national and international levels. Lawyers skilled in energy law keep companies aligned with these evolving standards, ensuring they remain compliant, reduce legal risks, and avoid costly fines. Effective navigation of regulatory frameworks enables companies to focus on innovation and growth. 2. Shaping Strategic Contracts and Agreements Whether negotiating with suppliers, forming partnerships, or managing government relations, energy lawyers structure contracts that secure favorable terms and protect the company’s interests. A strong legal foundation in these agreements provides stability and fosters trust with stakeholders, key to sustaining competitive advantage. 3. Facilitating Sustainable Practices As the energy sector shifts toward sustainability, lawyers help companies interpret environmental regulations and integrate them into their practices. From carbon capture to renewable initiatives, legal experts advise on compliance with sustainability standards, helping to build a reputation for responsibility and leadership. 4. Managing Risk and Crisis Response In a sector as high-stakes as energy, unexpected issues can arise—from environmental liabilities to operational shutdowns. Energy lawyers are essential in developing robust risk management protocols and swift crisis response strategies, helping companies mitigate damage, recover quickly, and protect their reputation. Energy lawyers are not just legal advisors; they are strategic partners, guiding energy companies through challenges and shaping a path toward sustainable success. Their role in regulatory alignment, contract strategy, and risk management is essential for effective and forward-thinking operations. #EnergyLawyers #LegalStrategy #EnergySector #Compliance #SustainableEnergy #RiskManagement #EnergyIndustry #Aganna

With the legal recruitment season in full swing once again, I enjoyed attending 'Energy Transition and the Law', hosted by Clifford Chance and Legal Cheek. After a very difficult year, I've made a commitment to throw myself back into legal recruitment and push myself to attend more events, and this was a great start. Listening to the panel, I picked up some great insights - with 2 standouts discussed below: 1) I came to appreciate just how many facets there are to the legal energy sector, beyond those specifically involved in energy and infrastructure. Finance, real estate, intellectual property, regulatory, antitrust and tax all play key roles in delivering for clients. 2) 'Understand the asset to understand the risk'. Whilst commercial awareness is always stressed, I'd not appreciated how this translated to technical understanding when it comes to energy and infrastructure. Understanding how complex engineering processes function for projects like off-shore wind is key to providing the best advice for clients. Thanks to the panel for giving up their time and expertise, and to Chloe Hatchett Sparkes for organising! I'm looking forward to attending future events and building my awareness of other legal sectors in the coming months ☺️ #law #legalsector #legalrecruitment #energy #legalcheek

At a company like Envo Build, which focuses on energy consumption or sustainability, would likely be involved in a range of legal and regulatory responsibilities related to the company’s operations. Here’s what I am going to do as a Chief Legal Officer(CLO): 1. **Compliance with Energy Regulations**: I would ensure that Envo Build complies with local, national, and international laws governing energy consumption, environmental impact, and sustainability. This includes laws related to energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and renewable energy standards. 2. **Contracts and Agreements**: I would oversee the drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts with suppliers, customers, and partners. This might involve agreements for energy procurement, renewable energy installations, or technology licensing agreements. 3. **Risk Management**: Help the company navigate the legal risks associated with energy consumption, sustainability practices, and any potential environmental liabilities. They might advise on the legal implications of energy policies or the company's participation in carbon credit programs. 4. **Intellectual Property Protection**: If Envo Build develops new technologies or innovations related to energy efficiency or consumption reduction, I would ensure that the company’s intellectual property (IP) is properly protected, which could include patents or trademarks. 5. **Litigation and Dispute Resolution**: If Envo Build is involved in legal disputes—whether with regulators, competitors, or other stakeholders— I would lead the legal strategy to defend the company’s interests. This could include litigation related to energy efficiency standards, environmental damage, or contractual disputes. 6. **Policy Advocacy**: I might also be involved in lobbying efforts or advocacy for energy policies that align with Envo Build's goals, engaging with lawmakers and regulatory bodies to shape energy regulations in favor of sustainable practices. Essentially, In Envo Build I would combine legal expertise with a focus on energy and sustainability, ensuring that the company operates within the legal frameworks while pursuing its mission to optimize energy consumption and reduce environmental impact.
