Studies show that warming patients and maintaining a core temperature of 36ºC or higher helps improve outcomes in post-anaesthetic care by reducing the frequency of complications often associated with unintended hypothermia. Keeping patients warm throughout perioperative periods is also known to facilitate increased wound healing, more rapid recovery from anaesthetic, and a speedier return to normal. By efficiently warming patients using a warm air mattress you can reduce the risks associated with longer operating times and shorten post-operative stay. Kanmed Warmcloud offers a temperature range of 31°C - 42°C and a pressure range of 1–10 (about 5–50 mb) - which gives efficient warming and pressure relief in one system. “Innovation to me involves coming up with new ideas and devices, but also developing new approaches to the use of established interventions." Deirdre Fitzgerald, Consultant in Respiratory and Pleural Medicine in Tallaght University Hospital is improving patient care through innovation. She has enrolled patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) onto a virtual platform where they will be followed for early signs of deterioration. Her push to change the most commonly dispensed inhaler in TUH to a more sustainable version has halved the hospital’s inhaler-related carbon footprint. Deirdre is currently working on a project looking at using a handheld ultrasound device in the community to identify any other medical needs in patients that may need a separate referral. She advises anyone seeking to innovate to “start by defining the problem in detail, identifying stakeholders and making a process map and root cause analysis. This helped me to find gaps in the service that I was unaware of. Also, ask colleagues and stakeholders for their thoughts on your idea”.
