As International Energy Agency (IEA) warns, without decisive action, climate risks could reach irreversible levels by the century's end. Interestingly, EU leaders seem to have removed a call to ‘prepare for new climate realities' from their 5-year policy priorities (!) Communities expect their governments to protect them - we can't afford any more delay. More 👇 https://lnkd.in/da7Wu7ec

🌅 #ClimateAction must be ambitious, just and inclusive. On #WorldEnvironmentDay, let's explore together how to collectively assess and enhance energy transitions partnerships. One of the more recent phenomena to emerge on the international climate policy horizon, Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) promised to deliver quickly and effectively on just energy transitions in a select few developing countries. However, forged among a small group of partners outside the multilateral climate policy space, it is not yet clear how ambitious, just and inclusive they are. UNRISD convened a series of expert conversations and calls for an in-depth collective assessment to improve climate justice outcomes of JETPs. The brief with policy insights and recommendations is now available to download.

I’m still reflecting on the past couple of days at the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 – there were so many impactful speakers and fascinating topics covered. But as a newcomer to sustainable investing I couldn’t help reflecting on my former career in the public service. Public policy will play a critical role in incentivising the private investment that so many amazing conservation and natural resource management organisations are crying out for. Like many other attendees, I found Carlos Manuel Rodriguez's framing that ongoing nature loss is a governance failure to be powerful. Until we have nature positive governance across currently competing policy portfolios like environment and resources, we will not have the coherent policy framework needed to drive the transformational changes across our economy and financial system that are needed for nature positive. Likewise, strong leadership is needed to halt and reverse nature loss and achieve the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Strong leadership was on display across many of the organisations represented, who have been working relentlessly to protect nature for a long time, with minimal resources. But we need our political leaders to be stronger advocates for nature, including by no longer subsidising nature-destructive practices and driving public education on the benefits of sustainable production and consumption. Finally, it often feels like the government and private sectors are waiting for the other to move first on nature. Both sectors have a role to play, but for private capital to flow, investors will need a demonstrable return. There was good discussion on blended finance, natural capital accounting, and emerging biodiversity credits, and businesses are getting better at articulating the value of nature. But as sustainability practitioners we will struggle to make the case for investing in nature unless we can quantify a financial return. I hope government will work closely with the finance sector to develop more innovative investment products and funding models in future. A big thank you to the teams at the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for organising a great summit – your hard work was on full display! #naturepositive #GNPS

PRE ELECTION Climate Barometer BRIEFING: PUBLIC OPINION ON CLIMATE & NET ZERO So far, climate change hasn't been driving the UK election discourse. But we know the environment is important to voters, even if most people aren't walking around with net zero targets in their heads. People care about nature, the sewage in our rivers, and the impact a changing climate has on wildlife. Climate policies aren't divisive. But that doesn't mean the details and differences don't matter. So as the snap polls and election hot-takes pour in, we sat down with our friends at Climate Outreach, Media Bounty and More in Common to piece together a shared story of public opinion on climate change and net zero Sign up for a pre-election briefing that offers a signal in the noise, a foundation for making sense of new polling, and a tool to inform campaigns during the election period:
