“In competition or conflict, space is the ultimate high ground, and we must be able to secure the domain for our use, while denying advantage to the adversary … By working together, we better achieve integrated deterrence, and our collective efforts are greater than any individual contribution." - The Honorable Kristyn Jones, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller We couldn't agree more! Thank you Honorable Jones and United States Space Force for highlighting the historical Link 16 work SDA is doing with our Australian partners. Link 16 is a tactical datalink communication system used by the United States, NATO, and coalition forces to transmit and exchange real-time situational awareness data among all network participants. Japan and Poland joining the U.S. military's WGS satellite system marks an expansion in space-based military communications due to rising global tensions. Run by the U.S. Space Force, WGS includes 10 geostationary satellites; WGS-11 and WGS-12 will launch in 2025 and 2027. The network helps reduce satellite costs for participating nations like Japan and Poland, adding to a growing coalition. NATO's initiatives, Northlink and Starlift, aim to bolster satellite communication and launch capabilities in response to security threats, especially in the Arctic. The unprecedented 500% surge in foreign military sales requests to the U.S. Space Force reflects a significant global shift as more nations recognize space as a domain critical to national security, economic vitality, and global stability. As we collectively progress into a space-faring era, it is imperative for the United States to lead as the partner of choice for responsible, rule-abiding nations. By supporting our allies and partners in securing the space domain, we are not only fostering resilience against potential threats but also ensuring a sustainable and peaceful operational environment. Failing to provide this support could compel allied nations to turn to less scrupulous actors, potentially increasing the risk of destabilizing activities in space.

While public-private partnerships for outer space are increasingly common in both the civilian and military spheres, the development of relevant regulations has lagged. Strengthening regulatory frameworks, particularly to achieve space sustainability and manage the militarisation of outer space, will be crucial for space powers regardless of their size and capabilities. Today in Asia Times, I wrote about the US Space Force activating a unit in Japan to counter threats from China, Russia, and North Korea. This new unit, known as the United States Space Forces-Japan (USSPACEFOR-JPN), was established at Yokota Air Base and aims to enhance space security and long-term sustainability. The move reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare and the critical role of space in national defense strategies. Under the command of US Colonel Ryan Laughton, USSPACEFOR-JPN will support US Forces Japan by planning, integrating, and executing space security efforts in coordination with Japanese counterparts. The unit's establishment follows commitments made at the July 2024 Security Consultative Committee to strengthen bilateral coordination across domains, including cyber, space, and electromagnetic warfare. This development underscores the importance of robust space expertise to enhance joint warfighting capabilities and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.

#BRUSSELS — #European Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius called today for a "European Space Shield" to unite its defense efforts in space. "I want to set up a dialogue with member states and space commands to look at options towards a European space domain awareness to monitor threats, including military threats" he said in a speech at the 17th European Space Conference. These moves would be "building blocks towards a European Space Shield to unite our defense efforts in space" he added. Countries are increasingly competing for dominance in space, with Russia and China in particular teaming up after the Russian invasion of Ukraine for projects such as a joint lunar nuclear plant, but "we cannot leave space to the axis of aggressive authoritarians," he told attendees. "Europe must maintain leadership in space," he said. The EU currently spends around €2 billion a year on space. Kubilius also sounded a note of caution against Elon Musk and other private entrepreneurs with space ambitions. "Space entrepreneurs are doing exciting things in space," the commissioner said, adding that while "structural problems" are holding the EU back, "if we do nothing, we risk stagnation." He also called for member countries to "buy European." The Italian government is currently in talks with Musk's SpaceX for a €1.5 billion deal to provide encrypted telecommunications services via his Starlink satellite internet provider. https://lnkd.in/dKuP8yTY

LOST IN SPACE Over the last decade, the United States has increasingly relied on satellite systems for military operations, communication, and navigation, making them some of our most critical assets. During this same period, our adversaries developed more sophisticated counter-space capabilities, particularly as they relate to EMI, EMPs, and DEWs. In recent years, Congress and the DOD have begun to play catch-up budgeting, spending some $842 billion in FY 2024 and providing a modest increase for FY 2025. Given the immensity of the threat and the sheer number of assets at risk, this expenditure level will not reduce the threat significantly. #spacewarfare #EMS #EMP #nationaldefense

The big question is: How do we keep DoD innovation in these areas of commercialization moving forward in the face of stiff resistance? Government changes slowly - deliberately with some good reasons - but getting the warfighter what he needs, where he needs it and when he needs it is critical. How do we balance these imperatives?
Philip Harlow, President of Telesat Government Solutions, weighs in on a new report from the Defense Science Board, calling for increased adoption of commercial space technologies to bolster U.S. military capabilities. Read more in today’s The Critical Link blog. https://lnkd.in/evXHFjCi

Donald #Psychopath Trump's anti-China policies vainly antagonized China. Donald #Psychopath Trump must take necessary responsibility for this. If US continues to suffocate China's economy, it will eventually repeat the failure of WW2. And, Japanese businesses such as Toyota, Canon, Nippon Steel , etc. have long assisted China's evolution of manufacturing sector, which eventually enabled China's sophisticated capabilities at space development. Therefore, US should in the first place file series of lawsuits against such Japanese businesses demanding tens of trillions of dollars as reparation. Therefore, US institutions should immediately confiscate total assets of Nippon Steel ASAP. Short-sell Nippon Steel and confiscate its assets. This is the right measure that US should take.
Is the US at risk of losing its status as the world’s dominant space power? Our expert Dominic Chiu says that plans for space warfare were at the heart of China’s recent military reorganization and mirror the US’ creation of a Space Force under former President Trump. Tom Porter
