We asked our faculty to pick one of their favourite non-fiction books and explain their choice. #Vlerick Professor Oli Mihalache has chosen for 'Both/ And Thinking' by Wendy K Smith and Marianne Lewis. “I have been enjoying Feifei Li’s The Worlds I See. As far as I know, she is the only female – and one of the few core scientists (such as Jeff Hinton) – who has experienced the AI winter as well as played a crucial role in AI development. The stories of her personal and scientific journey are inspiring. It is not strictly a management book, but it tells an interesting inside story of AI’s history, interwoven with her personal journey as an immigrant speaking no English at the age of 16, pursuing her studies while running a dry-cleaning shop to support her family, and so on. What is inspiring to me as a researcher is that even something central to the advance of AI, ImageNet, had a long period of difficulty and was received with scepticism from some top academics.”

Over the last 4 months, I have spent more time on two sentences in my book than many pages combined. It has been on the definition of the word "literacy". It is a word used frequently and, yet, doesn't have a universal definition. As we continue into a world dominated by AI and begin to use terms like "AI literacy", I dedicated a portion of my book to the word's history, purpose, and its meaning and role throughout the generations. This is what I am using to explore the required skills and tools for AI literacy - please share thoughts, research papers etc if you have to continue shaping the definition Literacy is the valued and accepted skills and tools needed to create, communicate, and comprehend information. As a researcher I do get the idea that new researchers often struggle with basics of applied science communication including my peers and juniors, I have had the privilege of being mentored by some truly wonderful researchers and I feel like it would be a good idea to share the guidance I have received. I would like to plan and host a simple online 3 day workshop on the basics of science communication, including the framing and understanding of how a paper is written, avoiding and removing plagiarism without ai, basics of planning and creating figures and how Elixer operates to provide a behind the scenes outlook.
