Icelandair’s first Airbus A321neo (TF-IAA) has been spotted during taxi checks, marking a historic shift for the airline as it transitions from an all-Boeing fleet! This A321-200NX is the first of seven interim aircraft, leased from SMBC and CDB Aviation, to join the fleet. Additionally, Icelandair has placed a firm order for 13 Airbus A321XLRs, signaling a significant expansion of its Airbus operations. Exciting times ahead for the Keflavik-based airline! Earlier today Emirates went public with their order for five more B777 freighters from Boeing, just within three months of them making a similar order with the American plane maker. With the latest order, Boeing will need to deliver a total of14 factory-built freighters to Emirates by the end of 2026. Against this background watch the interview with Nadeem Sultan of Emirates SkyCargo that we recorded in June this year in Shanghai during air cargo China and transport logistics China exhibition and conference. He had then revealed the that Emirates will make a final decision on the choice of the new production freighters from Airbus (A350F) and Boeing (B777-8F) before the end of 2024. In the same interview, he also talked about the delay in plane deliveries by Boeing and how the Dubai-headquartered carrier is making alternate arrangements to shore up main-deck capacity through ACMI deals to fulfil customer demands. Sultan also echoed the same sentiments at the Future Aviation Week, held at the Museum of the Future in Dubai last week, during a panel discussion on 'Perspectives of freight demand & logistics centers'. Reliance on just two companies for planes; particularly for wide-body, long-haul freighters currently the option is just Boeing. The American plane maker is struggling. Delay in getting freighters as per schedule has a huge negative impact on capacity as the demand for air freight has been growing over the last nine months. Air China places order for 100 COMAC C919 jets Air China has announced its intention to purchase 100 COMAC C919 jets, marking a substantial investment in China’s burgeoning aviation industry. The deal, valued at $10.8 billion based on list prices, signals a boost for Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, presented as a domestic challenger to Western industry giants Airbus and Boeing. According to a filing by Air China, the delivery of these jets is scheduled between 2024 and 2031. “The transaction is in line with the development plan of the company and the market demand, which is conducive to the group’s optimization of fleet structure and long-term supplement of fleet capacity,” Air China said in a statement. Air China, one of China’s top three carriers, currently operates the COMAC ARJ21 regional jet with around 20 in service. China Eastern Airlines, another major Chinese carrier, ordered 100 COMAC C919 aircraft in September 2023. The COMAC C919 enters a competitive arena, pitting itself against Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320neo, both leading models in global jetliner sales. As Boeing and Airbus lose their appeal to commercial airlines, China may be in place to become the globe’s primary supplier of passenger aircraft before the mid-21st century. The dual communist and capitalist nation is the world’s biggest manufacturer. It has strengthened its aviation industry. Official government reporting states that domestic clients have ordered at least 570 of China’s C919 passenger planes. The planes are ultimately designed for the global marketplace. The C919 will be a direct alternative to the Airbus A320 neo and the ill-fated Boeing 737 MAX. China’s goal is to service at least 10% of the global market in the next decade.
