Perfect quote to end off this Monday. This quote summarises design as seen by the executives - whether you’re in graphic design, product design, UX design, or UI design. Many appreciate the beauty of the end product that satisfies what they desire. However many cannot appreciate the work that goes behind it or the eventual value that it delivers to the end-user. 3 Key Takeaways from this article... 1 - 𝖢𝗈𝗇𝖼𝖾𝗉𝗍𝗎𝖺𝗅 𝗏𝗌. 𝖵𝗂𝗌𝗎𝖺𝗅 𝖥𝗂𝖽𝖾𝗅𝗂𝗍𝗒 𝗂𝗇 𝖣𝖾𝗌𝗂𝗀𝗇: Visuals are crucial in design but can mask incomplete thinking. Designers risk creating visually appealing yet functionally deficient artifacts without tools to establish conceptual fidelity. This misalignment can result in a negative value, as stakeholders often prioritise deliverables over the rigorous design process. 2. 𝖳𝗁𝖾 𝖥𝗈𝗋𝗆 𝖥𝖺𝖼𝗍𝗈𝗋 𝖳𝗋𝖺𝗉: Business-driven focus on deliverables leads to the form factor trap, where the design process is optimised, reducing the final product's quality. Design’s value lies in the process, not just the visual outputs. When the process is overlooked, designs lack meaningful information and fail to deliver true user benefits. 3. 𝖤𝗆𝗉𝖺𝗍𝗁𝗒 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝖣𝖾𝗌𝗂𝗀𝗇 𝖯𝗋𝗈𝖼𝖾𝗌𝗌: Effective design requires empathy for users and colleagues, emphasising a thorough process over quick deliverables. Aligning on the primary user benefit before ideating solutions ensures the design addresses real user needs. This approach fosters collaboration and helps avoid the form factor trap, ultimately leading to more valuable and effective design outcomes. Have some time? Product designers seek guidance on five essential design principles that shape remarkable design journeys. To elevate user experience, one must transcend the mundane to achieve the extraordinary. Let's delve into these five design principles that possess the transformative power to redefine your design approach: 1️⃣ Empathy: It's not just about understanding users; it's about forging deep connections. Design with empathy and witness your creations resonate profoundly. 2️⃣ Emotions: Design isn't just functional; it's emotional. Build connections that linger in users' memories by evoking emotions through design. 3️⃣ Progressive Disclosure: Focus on what truly matters. Prioritize essential details to enhance user focus and interaction. 4️⃣ Micro-interactions: It's the little things that count. Craft detailed interactions that leave a lasting impact, enhancing the responsiveness of your interface. 5️⃣ Refinement: The journey to perfection never ends. Continuously refine your design to meet users' evolving needs and expectations. Master these principles, and you embark on a journey to create not merely aesthetically pleasing designs, but truly remarkable experiences. PS. Lessons from Don Norman: Designing with the User in Mind Embrace Human-Centered Design Don Norman emphasizes that design should always start with the needs, behaviors, and experiences of users. By understanding how people think and act, we can create products that are intuitive and enjoyable to use. The Power of Affordances Affordances are the clues in a design that indicate how something can be used. Good design makes the functions of a product obvious, reducing the need for instruction and helping users feel confident in their interactions. Simplicity Over Complexity Complexity can overwhelm users and lead to frustration. Norman advocates for simplicity in design, where the focus is on clear, straightforward interfaces that guide users naturally toward their goals. Iterative Design is Key Designing is an ongoing process. Norman’s iterative design approach involves testing, feedback, and refinement, ensuring that the final product truly meets user needs and expectations. Errors are Learning Opportunities Design should anticipate user errors and provide gentle guidance. Norman teaches that mistakes are part of the learning process, and good design helps users recover quickly and easily continue their tasks. Design for Real-Life Contexts Understanding the context in which a product will be used is crucial. Norman's work reminds us that design should account for real-world environments, constraints, and scenarios to create meaningful and relevant solutions. These lessons are timeless reminders for designers to keep the user at the heart of everything we create. Inspired by Don Norman, let's continue designing experiences that are functional and delightful. #UXDesign #UIDesign #HumanCenteredDesign #DonNorman #DesignThinking

Pamela Pavliscak’s book, Emotionally Intelligent Design, offers a memorable acronym, FEEL: Find, Envision, Evolve, Live. This model can be used as a step-by-step guide or as an enhancement to your existing design practices, helping you to bring a deeper emotional awareness to your work. Let’s break it down. F – Find: Understanding Emotion in Multiple Dimensions. "Find" is the first step, and it’s all about discovering and understanding emotions from multiple angles. It encourages us to use a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods to uncover the full range of human emotions. This isn’t just about identifying what users feel, but also digging into why they feel that way. By doing this, we can design products and experiences that resonate on a much deeper level. E – Envision: Mapping Emotional Experience and Generating Concepts. After getting a grasp on the emotional landscape, it’s time to "Envision." This step is about mapping out the user’s emotional journey and using that insight to generate design concepts. It’s not just about creating something functional—it’s about crafting experiences that evoke the right emotions and build meaningful connections. E – Evolve: Modelling and Building Relationships. In the "Evolve" stage, we take the concepts we’ve envisioned and start refining them, building a stronger relationship between the design and the user. This is where the magic of iteration happens—testing, tweaking, and adapting to meet emotional needs. L – Live: Sustaining Relationships. Lastly, "Live" is all about sustaining the emotional connections you’ve built. It’s not enough to create a design that resonates at launch; you need to continuously engage, gather feedback, and refine the experience to keep those connections alive. Whether you follow it step-by-step or use it to enhance your current practices, the goal is the same: design with heart and create products that truly connect with people. #UserExperience #DesignThinking #UXDesign #CustomerExperience #HumanCentredDesign.
