There has been talk in certain regions about reducing the demand for electricity or "demand destruction". However, there will always be a need for more electricity one way or another. This is a good example of increased electricity consumption from another sector, even if we see a decrease from industrial for example. The push for #electrification and #EV will also increase the demand, which cannot be met (at least reliably) by sources with intermittency problems. Hence, we will not see a reduction in the use of fossil fuels and/or nuclear on a global scale. However, we may very well see regulators from certain regions push agendas that reduce #energysecurity, reduce #reliability, causing more #blackouts, and send prices up for the average consumer. We are already seeing an increase in the use of #coal along with #naturalgas and #LNG despite the efforts to end the use of #fossilfuels. Perhaps a better approach to the #energytransition would be one that reduces emissions by replacing coal with gas and nuclear and also addresses #energypoverty, which I consider to be the true existential threat of our time. www.rbac.com
Some of the world's largest data centers require more than 100 megawatts of power capacity, enough to power around 80,000 US households. On the other hand, small data centers, which host between 500 and 2,000 servers, may only require 1 to 5 megawatts of power. In 2020, data centers consumed an estimated 196 to 400 terawatt-hours of energy, equivalent to 1% to 2% of the world's annual energy consumption.
