In 2021 the International Energy Agency (IEA) said 50% of tech needed to reach net-zero didn’t exist commercially. In three years, that number has dropped to 35%. While new carbon avoidance technologies have emerged, many are not yet at a commercial scale. That’s why the IEA’s momentous 50th anniversary meeting last week focused on innovation — specially exploring how technologies can succeed at the “demo phase” (aka "first of a kind" or FOAK commercial plants) to eliminate technical and scale-up risk, so they can become climate-saving solutions at the needed full-scale. I was honored to participate in a fireside chat and subsequent roundtables at the event, to share my perspective on the support needed for innovations like Sublime Systems to scale to cost-parity with many high-emitting processes that have existed for hundreds of years. The answer is always a greater availability of capital, both public and private that can support what are often the most expensive examples of disruptive net-zero technology before costs come down in subsequent installations. We are very encouraged to see the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) stepping up with ARPA-E and the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations and expect to see more innovative financing solutions emerge around the globe. Thanks to Akshat Rathi, who led a terrific discussion on the stage. (I was thrilled to receive an early copy of his book Climate Capitalism, which is coming out in a few weeks). And thank you to Breakthrough Energy and Decarbonization Partners for hosting a dinner ahead of the event, where we discussed all this and more. To net-zero and beyond!

When someone says ‘clean energy transition’ — what images come to mind? If you’re like most people, you probably imagine established, picture-perfect solutions like solar panels and wind turbines. But solutions for heavy industry are part of a market that is largely still emerging. Green fuels are necessary to get hard-to-abate sectors like industrial heat, heavy mobility, and ammonia production to net zero. But progress will continue to be slow without significant disruptive innovation. Read our latest article to get a look at a few of the pioneering companies innovating disruptive solutions in the green fuels landscape. https://lnkd.in/eqQDcUpy
