Once upon a time, my colleagues and I were trying to establish what features to include in a major digital release. We had a list 📋 of over 500 line items, and only enough capacity to include 50 – 100 items in the program. One of the biggest problems was that the features on the list were not directly comparable. Some were big, some were small, some needed specific hardware, some only helped a subset of customers. In short, the items on the list were not ‘apples to apples’. They were apples 🍎, pineapples 🍍 , and a host of other foods 🥗 . What also became apparent was that some features had much higher value when combined with other features. My favourite example of this was three items related to electric vehicle charging. 1. Low charge alert, remaining range (🍎 - expected) 2. Locating a charge station within range (🍍 - exotic) 3. Being able to reserve a charge station ( 🍋 – zest) The three features were all important, but unless they were combined as a set there was limited value to the customer. After all, it’s not helpful to be directed to a charge station where all the charge posts are taken, especially if you don’t have enough range to find another one. For a seamless charging experience, the features needed to be combined. What the customer really needed was juice. 🍹 When we simplify our customers lives by providing an experience🍹, instead of just features 🍍 , we provide significantly more value, with less effort. Aligning priorities across multiple teams is one of the biggest challenges in delivering products. Keeping the final customer experience in sight helps teams to sync up their feature lists and speed up delivery of valued experiences. #delivery #CustomerExperience

Mark Pymm, this is a valuable analysis, and one that highlights key lessons for the EV charging sector. At Onroute, we’ve seen first-hand how critical it is for manufacturers and installers to stay laser-focused on operational efficiency and customer experience. Challenges like inconsistent strategy, integration hurdles, and a disconnect from end users don’t just impact the driver experience—they also ripple through the entire supply chain, from installation to aftercare. That’s why we’ve dedicated our platform to supporting the teams behind the chargers. By providing tools that streamline field service management, enhance customer support, and improve visibility across installations, we help manufacturers and installers maintain agility, scalability, and alignment with customer needs—even as the market evolves. The industry is moving fast, and those who can simplify the operational complexity behind EV charging infrastructure will be the ones to lead the charge forward. We’re proud to play our part in making that possible.
Pod Point losing a third of its value is the latest in what feels like a long-running decline, not a sudden dip tied to EV registration numbers, but the result of years of missteps. It’s a reminder of how critical it is to stay focused, adaptable, and agile in this industry. Once a leader in EV charging, Pod Point has struggled to maintain its position: 1. Too Many Pivots: Pod Point never seemed to settle on where it wanted to focus its network efforts. From big investments in public AC charging to later shifting away, the constant changes left their strategy unclear and the market unsure of their direction. 2. Avoiding OCPP: Their reluctance to build in Open Charge Point Protocol, made it harder for Pod Point to compete in the fleet and workplace markets, where flexibility and integration over time are essential. 3. Disconnect from Drivers: Pod Point once dominated driver referral partnerships, working with most OEMs and fleet providers. But as EV drivers expected more seamless, consumer-friendly experiences, they were overtaken by competitors like Ohme and ChargedEV, businesses that embraced e-commerce-driven simple, slick and modern tech to build their end-to-end customer journeys on the back of platforms like Onroute. Losing key partnerships year after year was inevitable once the driver experience became an afterthought. Pod Point’s challenges aren’t unique but are a clear signal to the rest of the industry: focus on the end user, stay adaptable and agile, and don’t lose sight of the basics. In a space that’s constantly evolving, those who keep pace will win. Those who don’t? Well, the results speak for themselves.

We’ve taken our first step towards supporting fully automated planning of EV routes, opening a transition to more environmentally friendly logistics 🔋 With our new [beta] Charging Stop feature, planners can add dedicated charging stops into routes, giving drivers clear guidance on when and where to charge along the way. This feature helps planners ensure that the delivery timeframes promised to customers will not be impacted by unplanned stops for re-charging. Here’s how it works: 🔹 Simple setup: When creating or updating a route, planners manually add a Charging Stop with details like address, duration, and timeframe to ensure it fits into the schedule. 🔹 Driver integration: Charging stops appear in the Driver app, so drivers have clear instructions on where and when to charge. This addition supports smoother operations and keeps deliveries on time and fully powered. Further enhancements are on the way, which will improve the planner experience with additional functionalities and increasing automations. #LastMile #LogisticsSolutions #FleetManagement #EV
