https://lnkd.in/gM_mXJXR Pat Gelsinger is making virtue out of necessity when he joined #intel , it's main business of building CPUs for servers and laptops was in doldrums. some may include desktops, but frankly that's an "also sold" arm or laptop business. laptops had already started recovering, but with many hickups servers were still on a downhill road, towards a cliff, with then management having foot on the accelerator and foundries was on a path best left unsaid. mobileye, GPUs, FPGA etc. were expensive distractions that took both money, but a much more precious resource - management attention Pat right from the beginning is trying to restructure Intel by breaking into parts, without actually saying so. IFS was formed to get govt subsidies - there is absolutely no other reason. If Intel succeeds in it's stated goal of being an at par foundry with TSMC (they say ahead, but you have to consumer some strong stuff to believe that. TSMC's N3 is far ahead and N3P will match or beat 18A, and go to production sooner, as per TSMC explicitly and Intel implicitly on their public announcements), it will be in a relatively high capex low margin high fixed cost and somewhat seasonal business - hardly a "turn around" to its haydays of 15yrs ago when it decided what the market will look like 4 yrs down the line and this is NOT a criticism, it is absolutely brilliant. run a high capex high R&D, high fixed cost, low returns business, that you must run, but on govt money the only issue is - govt is not exactly that naive and wouldn't let you eat the subsidy so eventually it must be a different entity with its own accounts. The other big immediate issue was servers and frankly whether it will have great products or not, one thing is undeniable - now they meet schedules and performance targets. After 7 yrs of struggles. My belief is they will get their mojo back, even though servers is now much more competitive than ten years ago. Now even customers like #Amazon, #Google and #Microsoft are making their own chips and there are the likes of #Ampere doing very well. And that's before one considers the perennial threat from #AMD which has had better products for a while. Still this is a sticky business and Intel still retains good marketshare As for mobileye - they were not getting enough value within Intel umbrella and Intel couldn't help it's needs much. mobileye by the way has never made a single chip inside Intel anyway, and they use ARM. And they competed with Intel's own automotive teams that did sell Intel's own x86 based chips Alterra wasn't doing bad, but nor was it doing great. So looking at the above, Pat Gelsinger is actually doing what would have been obvious strategy when he joined. As for what he says - he says a lot of things and he says a lot of different things just two quarters later. All CEOs do. Just look at his actions.
