Majestic veteran oak, struck by lightening a few years back, but regenerating from the base. Still part of north Gloucestershire's and south Herefordshire's rich legacy of hedgerow oaks. Unfortunately there are very few to replace them, so it is a landscape in transition unless we work with landowners to help them conserve what we have (and not cut gate slots into trunks) and get new ones planted. Funding for new field trees is often reliant on approaches by busy landowners and adopting a broader land management approach. In combination with this, it is important to get ahead of the game at a landscape scale, talking to landowners and identifying opportunities and having field tree schemes ready for BNG and future grants. @Inhabitect is proud of our ongoing partnership with The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay and the pivotal role we played in the Kid's Creek Riparian Restoration and Wetland Enhancement Project. By leveraging our expertise in sustainable design and green infrastructure, our team has been working hard to restore the natural habitat, improve water quality, and enhance the overall health of our local ecosystem. The project is in a degraded wetland, along a major tributary to Grand Traverse Bay, that was almost entirely comprised of invasive species and devoid of a natural riparian buffer following historic farming activities and development. To help restore this area and combat the detrimental effects of pollutants in stormwater runoff, a 1-acre engineered wetland now pre-treats and filters over 1.1 million gallons of stormwater per year, before it enters the creek that eventually flows into #GrandTraverseBay. We also restored 4800 linear feet of stream by installing a riparian buffer consisting of 457 trees, 1050 shrubs, 1500 live stakes, 3078 plugs, and 1.4 acres of native seed! In addition, we installed 6 habitat/wildlife structures and treated 4.5 acres of invasive species! The Cherokee Nation is adding infrastructure to support 74 new RV sites and five cabins. “Since breaking ground, we have made significant progress,” said James Thornton, director of development at Cherokee Nation Businesses. “We’ve installed more than 30 miles of underground utilities, which includes water, sewer and electric infrastructure. 💧 What Lies Beneath Colorado’s Reservoirs? Some of Colorado’s reservoirs are hiding more than just water – they conceal entire towns lost to history. Over the years, communities like Iola, Sapinero, and Cebolla were intentionally flooded to make way for major engineering projects, including the creation of Blue Mesa Reservoir – the state’s largest body of water. While Blue Mesa is now a popular destination for water sports and fishing, its creation came at a high cost. In the 1960s, these ranching towns were submerged, forever changing the local landscape. However, during a severe drought in 2018, the town of Iola briefly reemerged, exposing remnants of streets, structures, and memories long forgotten. This story is a reminder of Colorado’s delicate balance between serving a growing population and preserving its natural and historical treasures.
