COP29 Reflection #1: Daily Schedule 🖋️ 💭 Three weeks out from COP29 Azerbaijan in #Baku, and I have finally had some time to transcribe my thoughts. With lots to say about the process, organization, and outcomes, I have decided to organize and split up my thoughts into separate posts. For those who have attended a COP before (and for those who know my organizational habits), this will come as no surprise. However, if you have not been able to attend any of the previous COPs, I will first share a description of a typical daily schedule, sans commentary: 🗓️ 🚗 I would wake up between 7 and 7:30 am and finish up any last minute preparations before heading to the venue around 8 am. Without a direct bus and with unpredictable road closures, the travel time ranged from 20 minutes to over an hour by car. Throughout the day, I would attend numerous side events on topics ranging from global renewable energy transition to climate finance for Small Island Developing States, and everything in between. I was generally choosing between two or three panels to attend, and racing between rooms trying to catch the first half of some and the second half of others. 🏃♂️ ⏱️ Although relatively doable within the pavilion zone (one very big room), it proved quite the dilemma when events were held in different zones. Whether it was within the Blue Zone or between the Blue and Green Zones, it was often a 10-15 minute hustle between events which then led to the inevitable: missing both. This left little time for lunch, and I would have to force myself to take a quick bite or water bottle-refill break every once in a while–likely a shock for those who know my hydration and snacking tendencies. The last event would usually wrap up around 7 or 8 pm, which would mean waiting another 10-15 minutes for the Bolt (taxi) to arrive, followed by a big decision regarding dinner plans. Following end-of-day meetings, work, preparation for the next day, and potential dinner plans, the day usually finished around 1 or 2 am. 🫂 🥑 Sleep was beyond limited, but I was very fortunate to have The Global Youth Coalition team as my COP #supportcrew on the ground. COP29 Reflection #3: Positive Aspects 📚 ⏩ Following my previous critiques, I want to share more positive aspects of my involvement in COP29 Azerbaijan. First, having the opportunity to actually experience it in its entirety was incredible. Just as I was told repeatedly in advance, there really is nothing that anyone can say to prepare someone for #COP. The best way is to go and experience it in person. While there were times where I had imposter syndrome when engaging in a conversation with COP veterans or field experts, it was extremely beneficial to learn about the negotiation process and understand the layout and approach to the whole event. 🧩 🗣️ For example, it was initially difficult to understand the many abbreviations and acronyms. However, while it can take some time to learn what they mean, using the short-hand makes it much easier once familiar. I kept a list to add to whenever I heard a term or reference I did not understand, and I looked it up later to study a bit more. Although I am still far from fluent, I was able to expand on my “COP lingo” usage and will go into #COP30 much more prepared. 💡 🎨 From #sideevents to #negotiations themselves, there were so many ways to learn about new facets of the climate fight, connect with like-minded individuals, and facilitate new ideas for #actionprojects. Reflecting on my time in Baku, there were countless inspirational individuals changing the world in a myriad of ways. Not only were they working on #environmentalissues in practically every sector, but I met people who came up with unique, out-of-the-box ideas and innovations that have been implemented locally, regionally, and globally. The combination of creativity and simplicity demonstrates the power that can stem from a single idea. 🌐 🎩 Moreover, the will and determination to follow through proves the desire to facilitate meaningful change. Access to resources and capacity building may be limited, but there are so many ways to work around those barriers or find the tools and funding necessary to be successful. The numerous empowering initiatives created a network for #collaboration. Not only did I witness the development of partnerships, but I also had the opportunity to connect with various organizations and individuals, many of whom I am now collaborating with on other projects. Our London-based #COP29 event is happening!! 🎉🎉🎉 I'm utterly delighted to announce the UK COP29 Ambition Acceleration Leaders Forum will be taking place on Wednesday 20th November from 5pm-8pm as a hybrid event online/in-person.
