Paola Rodriguez-Masiu, Head of Research and Trade Analytics, and Thomas Hoogsteden, biofuels trader at STX Group, recently discussed the growing interest in sustainable fuels in the marine market in a Bunkerspot article. With uncertainties around new regulations, there's a noticeable trend of bundling bunker supplies with EUAs, and bunker firms are increasingly eager to offer related services. While transitioning from inexpensive to more sustainable fuels poses a challenge, it's crucial for companies to start preparing for upcoming changes. Exciting times for the shipping sector's green transformation! Cepsa anticipates a threefold rise in global #biofuel blend demand over the coming years, driven by new regulations and #decarbonization efforts. By 2025, biofuel bunker supplies could grow to 2-3 million metric tons annually, supporting the #maritime industry's transition to #sustainable fuels. This forecast comes as the #FuelEUMaritime regulation, aiming for an 80% carbon intensity reduction by 2050, is set to take effect next year.

Shipowners, traders and suppliers often ask us questions about biofuels ⛽🌿 Anything from what B numbers (like B30) mean, through how they can calculate emissions from biofuels, to which bio-feedstocks perform best. We have listened to you and followed up with a greatly anticipated interview on biofuel bunkering with one of the most prominent suppliers in the game. FincoEnergies and GoodFuels are household names in biofuel bunkering, with countless trials and commercial stems on record. Some of the most frequently asked questions have been generously answered in length by FincoEnergies commercial director Johannes Schurmann. Click on the image to read the full version of the interview covering: - The unexpected benefit from tricky biofuel tracers - New document could unbreak the chain of sustainability - Triple-stacked regulations and rebates to spur fresh biofuel demand - Shying away from unfamiliar bio price indexes can be risky https://lnkd.in/ePj79-gA #bunkering #biofuel #sustainability #innovation #shipsandshipping #maritime

From next year, it will no longer make economic sense for shipping companies travelling between two EU ports to run purely on VLSFO. 🚢💨 It will be cheaper to bunker sustainable biofuels, or buy compliance surpluses from overcompliant shipping companies, than it will be to burn VLSFO and pay the FuelEU Maritime fine. 🌾💰 Erik Hoffmann, Managing Editor of ENGINE, outlines the costs of each option in this clip recently recorded at Petrospot Limited's #ARACON2024. According to DNV’s latest white paper “Biofuels in Shipping”, key biofuels like FAME and HVO have great potential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and supporting compliance with maritime regulations, but their benefits to the industry could be constrained by limited supply in the future.
Biofuel can deliver significant GHG emissions reductions but future uptake could be hampered by supply, says DNV

Bio-fuels in Canada & MTRBs With the regulatory clearance of the use of biofuel blends of up to 30 percent (B30) from 2022, some Canadian vessels are running on biofuels. To remind, a Unified Interpretation (UI) approved by the IMO’s Marine Environment Committee in June 2022 allows blends containing up to 30% biofuel to be treated the same as fossil fuel oils, without the need for NOx emission assessments or exemptions from Flag State. Additionally, B30 to B100 biofuels can be used in engines certified in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 13, as long as there are no changes to NOx critical components or settings, however above will require an MTRB for use in Canadian waters. If you have any questions, or comments on this topic, please get in touch. You can also download our Guidance Notes for Class and Statutory Approval and Use of Marine Biofuels.
