Supporting Student-Athletes: A Guide for Parents, Mentors, and Coaches Venus Williams once said, "As a college athlete, you have to be excellent in both sports and academics. It’s a huge commitment, but it builds character and prepares you for whatever comes next in life." As student-athletes prepare to go back to school, it's crucial we’re there to support their journey. Are they balancing their roles as both student and athlete, or leaning more towards one? What path do they want to be on? Remember, you play a pivotal role in this journey. Here’s how you can provide the best support: 1. Encourage Balance: Help student-athletes find a healthy balance between academics and athletics. 2. Align Support with Goals: Ensure your guidance aligns with their academic and athletic aspirations. 3. Be a Mentor: Offer advice and share experiences to help them navigate challenges. 4. Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate their accomplishments, both big and small. 5. Provide Resources: Make sure they have access to the necessary resources for success in both areas. By offering balanced and aligned support, you can help student-athletes enjoy their journey and stay true to themselves. #studentathlete #mentorship #academicgoals #supportsystem #athletewellbeing #performanceoptimization #collegesports

This evening we hosted a termly ‘Dedicated Athlete Seminar’ for our students & parents on the topic of ‘balancing school work & training’ and it was brilliant. We are fortunate to have three U6 students who are living the experience of being student athletes and coming to the end of their A Level studies, whilst also striving for an academy contract & international rugby age group honours. They spoke maturely & with tremendous self awareness, providing the younger students and parents attending great tips & strategies to help manage the competing priorities they have in a sixth form and as pathway athletes. Their key takeaways: Start practicing scheduling your time early in your education so you get better at it and later, when time pressures mount, you are more effective and efficient at planning. As a student athlete you become more efficient at your work & waste less time. If you make a plan stick to it - don’t get distracted on phones etc if you have set that time for work then do the work, or everything will unravel! Make time for you! - build time into your schedule for switch off & re-charge. Communicate honestly with your teachers and parents - to ask for help is not weakness. Be prepared to make sacrifices - they argued it’s not a sacrifice if you love doing it & get intrinsic value from it! Understand your Why? - it helps with everything else. Coping with injury or under par performances - Treat adversity as an opportunity! Move on & don’t expect to be perfect all the time. Just be the best you can at that time. Whilst at school prioritise your academics. All three of these students have proved great role models & ambassadors. Most importantly they are great young men who sport has helped shape & I am sure will go on to great things whether that be in professional sport or other professional life. If you have great student role models in your school then I would encourage you to give them the platform to share their insights & learnings like this, as their impact and reach is far greater than we, as their teachers, can ever achieve. #studentathletes #schoolsport #rolemodels #athleticdevelopment

In both athletics and academics, I’ve learned that striving for perfection can sometimes lead to burnout. Instead, I focus on progress—the small, incremental steps that bring me closer to my goals. For example: •Every practice makes me a stronger runner, even if it’s not a PR day. •Every study session adds to my understanding, even if I don’t get every question right. •Every TA session builds my confidence in teaching, even if I don’t have all the answers. Progress reminds us to celebrate the journey, not just the destination. How do you track and celebrate progress in your life? #ProgressNotPerfection #PremedJourney #StudentAthlete #GrowthMindset

Can you believe it’s August 21st already?? The new school year and sports season are right around the corner (or may have already started for you!), and with that comes a lot of excitement – but also some stress. As a parent, you might be wondering: - How can I help my athlete manage the pressure of balancing schoolwork and sports? - What if they lose confidence after a tough game or challenging academic week? - How can I ensure they stay resilient and focused through the ups and downs of the season? Just like you wouldn’t send your child to school without a teacher to guide them, you wouldn’t want them navigating the challenges of a demanding sports season without the right support. Having someone in their corner who’s been where they’ve been, understands and can coach the mental game, and is an impartial person to talk to can make all the difference. That’s where my Mental Muscles program comes in. It’s designed to build confidence, resilience, and a winning mindset – the mental skills they need to succeed, all season long. 💪🏒🏀⚽ Enrollment closes on 𝟖/𝟑𝟏 OR when spots fill up, whichever comes first! Which ones have you got? A while back I was asked to come and speak with a group of first year BSc students at MMU Exercise and Sport Science department. I’d been an associate lecturer there for a number of years, but at that time I was working in the ‘outside’ world, business coaching and delivering sport psychology to athletes. The students were at the start of their university journey and the course organisers brought in a group of external people each year to give the students some ideas about what they could do once they graduated. ⏸️ Now, as you can imagine, when you’re in the first couple of months of uni, the last thing on your mind Is what is going to happen once you finish university! Yep, I can (vaguely) remember back to my early uni days! The focus at that point is usually socialising, lectures, socialising and socialising! Ok, perhaps a little more thought is put into the course, but you get my drift! 💠 And I believe there’s a lot of similarities to being an elite athlete. It’s so difficult to imagine what’s going to happen once you retire. 🎯In the early days you are often focusing on the day to day. The training. The next match or competition. Improving yourself. Selection. Injuries. And the list goes on. That can be such an all-consuming cycle and it’s sometimes difficult to lift the head and see what else is going on in life. ✳️ However, the day comes for every elite sportsperson when they step away from top level competition and move into the next stage of their lives. And thinking about the next phase doesn’t have to be that taboo subject. ✴️ So, below are the 3 tips for elite sportspeople who are still competing, based on the tips I gave to the uni students. I’d love to know how any of these have worked for you. #lifeaftersport #proplayer #habits #postsportscareer #exathlete #lifeinsport #mindhabits #eliteathlete #retiringathlete #sportcareertransition #createanedge #awinningedge #createyourfuture #beawesome

🔴Coaching centers often promise success but can hinder holistic growth by creating a stressful, distraction-filled environment. 🔰 On the other hand, structured settings like boarding schools provide a balanced atmosphere where students can focus on academics, sports, and skill-building without distractions. 👉By channeling their energy towards growth, students not only excel academically but also develop the life skills they need to succeed in the real world. Let’s shift the focus to true learning and overall development. 🌱🎓 #EducationMatters #HolisticLearning #StudentSuccess #SkillBuilding #FutureReady #BalancedGrowth #BeyondAcademics
