Today's #TBT is dedicated to the 21 visionary students who sparked Rachel Willis's journey to launch Elevating Equity. Back in 2014, Rachel posed a pivotal question: "What if educational leaders saw themselves not only as academic stewards but also as racial justice champions?" That seed of inquiry blossomed into a transformative 14-month program at Columbia University's Teachers College, where this cohort of trailblazing educators committed to fostering racial equity in their schools. They diversified their staff, facilitated restorative circles to mend racial tensions, and critically examined their curricula to ensure it reflected the diverse experiences of their students. Since then, these leaders have assumed roles as academic deans, principals, charter network leaders, curriculum designers, special education consultants, and DEI advocates. Their impact inspired Rachel to launch Elevating Equity in 2016, empowering more educators with the tools, knowledge, and mindset needed to lead racially just institutions. Today, a photo of this remarkable cohort graces Rachel's desk, serving as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of investing in leaders and centering racial equity. 🎓 Leading Toward Impact: Diversity and Leadership in Higher Education 🌟 For decades, colleges and universities have grappled with racial injustice and diversity challenges. Since 1992, The Leadership Alliance, founded by Brown University, has been a beacon of hope. This consortium of 41 institutions is dedicated to increasing the participation of underrepresented students in Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. programs. With over 6,000 undergraduates mentored and more than 1,000 doctoral scholars produced, The Leadership Alliance Consortium exemplifies the power of diversity in academia. Despite legal challenges, such as recent rulings on college admissions, the Alliance continues to pave the way for a diverse research workforce and academic community. The recent Presidential Forum in D.C. celebrated the Alliance's 30th anniversary, highlighting the crucial need for diversity in higher education. Many universities and colleges will be celebrating their first-gen students today (November 8), which is an important step toward inclusion and belonging. But do you know who first-gens are? This NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education fact sheet (from 2020) highlights information about the first-gen experience that we need to address in a forthright manner. For instance, do we have faculty, staff, and administrative leaders in place that have the lived experience and/or deep knowledge about what it means to be a first-gen student today? Celebrating existence and resilience is not enough. https://lnkd.in/gG4cU-ph #liberatingacademia #higheredleadership #inclusion

“Have you ever wondered how principals can foster a positive and equitable sense of school belonging among minoritized students in U.S. high schools?” I am excited to announce my new publication, coauthored with Professor Moosung Lee from Yonsei University, which appears in AERA Open, one of the flagship journals of the American Educational Research Association. This study found that shared leadership practices in schools contribute to a positive sense of belonging among American Indian and Alaska Native students in U.S. high schools. #nativeamerican, #indigenous, #beloning, #connection, #leadership, #belong, #equity, #inclusion, #community, #highschool https://lnkd.in/gh-xwDuy

Thrilled to announce that the highly-anticipated book, Developing an Intersectional Consciousness and Praxis, edited by the incredible Jonathan A. McElderry, Ph.D. and Stephanie Hernandez Rivera, PhD, is now available for order as part of the larger Identity & Practice in Higher Education-Student Affairs series, led by editors Pietro Sasso, Ph.D., and Shelley Price-Williams! It was a joy to collaborate with my former colleagues turned dear friends, Carolina E. Gonzalez, PhD, SHRM-SCP, and Nicole Videla, EdD, on writing a chapter for this transformative book titled Missing the Mark: A Call to Action for Well-Intentioned Institutional Leaders. Here’s a brief snippet from our chapter: "While the focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has increased across institutions of higher education, the need for anti-racist practices has become more pronounced amid a global pandemic, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, and overall civil unrest (Evatt-Young & Bryson, 2021). While some institutions have intentionally supported students from historically oppressed and excluded groups, their efforts still miss the mark, given their one-dimensional approaches (Loehwing & Craig, 2021; McElderry & Hernandez Rivera, 2017). Institutional leaders are positioned to provide direction on a coordinated vision for intersectional praxis on inclusivity and equity. To do so, senior leadership must take a proactive intersectional approach to implement new policies while looking at how current policies and practices may have led to inequitable and exclusive practices." This book is crucial for leaders and practitioners passionate about equity, inclusion, and making a real impact through intersectional consciousness. Don’t miss out—grab your copy and join us in this movement for change! #Intersectionality #Consciousness #Praxis #Equity #Inclusion #SocialJustice #Leadership #HigherEd #NewBookRelease

‘Maybe that makes a difference actually’ 💡: Attuning to praxis for anti-racist social justice leadership among nursery school head teachers in the UK 😊 The open-access article is now available 🔓 . It was a pleasure to write it with Mona Sakr and Magdalena Dujczynski. "This article shares a framework for anti-racist leadership within the early years profession. In doing so, it offers a stepping stone towards more formalised anti-racist praxis for early years professionals." #EarlyYears https://lnkd.in/eRW6Bn-f
