Yesterday, I had an interview that prompted a moment of introspection. When asked about my short-term and long-term goals, I reflected on advice from a committee member during my dissertation: “Life isn’t linear, Travis. It’s okay not to know everything. I wouldn’t be here if you did. Apply grace.” I shared this perspective in the interview, expressing that while life’s path isn’t always clear, my unique skills position me for various opportunities. I aim to work in an environment that fosters creativity, supports research, engages with community, and champions social justice. Although I felt uncertain about how I presented myself, especially in a space where my honesty might have seemed unconventional, I’m reminded of the saying: “If you want to make God laugh, tell them your plans.” Embracing life’s unpredictability, I trust that I am exactly where I need to be. As I say goodbye to Chegg after three years, I reflect on whether one person can make an impact. I know there are common misconceptions that DEI work is just about events, programs or initiatives. In truth, it's about creating systemic change, embedding inclusive practices into every aspect of the operations, and maintaining consistent investment in these efforts. While one person can catalyze change, they cannot – and should not – carry this responsibility alone. This truth resonates even more deeply now as I depart from Chegg. I'm proud of the work I've been able to accomplish, from building and developing the organization’s culture, to bringing in community organizing experts who equipped employees with new frameworks for change, to reimagining our hiring process from sourcing through interviewing. I'm incredibly proud to have worked alongside over 50+ ERG Leaders who have created vibrant communities, fostered a sense of belonging, and championed inclusion across the organization. At the same time, I struggle because I know I could have done a lot more. As the last remaining member of the DEI team, I've reflected extensively on the nature of institutional change. The true measure of an organization's dedication to DEI isn't in the moments of celebration, but in its willingness to invest in and sustain this critical work, especially during challenging times. The answer to my opening reflection is both yes and no. Yes, because every individual has the power to spark change and challenge the status quo. And no, because lasting, meaningful change requires more than individual effort – it demands sustained organizational commitment, dedicated resources, and unwavering institutional support. Lastly, to Kristal Cobb, Tameka Green, and Stacie Jaramillo: thank you for being the rare kind of managers who truly see, nurture, and champion their people. Having such remarkable leaders back-to-back has been a gift that has shaped not only my career but my understanding of what genuine leadership looks like. As for what's next? Everyone wants to use these firms because they’re loveable and hard to miss, (ie. they have the brand presence and global contacts). But SHREK isn’t always quick to see. So I’d like to offer a different perspective and option. Boutique firms and what we have to offer. A lot of the larger firms often look through the same lens and the same places, missing out on the passive leaders (who are generally ‘happy’ where they are) and not actively looking to change careers. Boutique firms on the other hand also leverage untapped networks, the longer game and building relationships with those who might be happy and aren’t currently looking. Until the right opportunity comes along, that is. That’s a missed opportunity for you if you’re only relying on SHREK. And why many of my clients have the upper hand.
