I had thought this practice (as seen in the photo) was common in Indian hospitals recently, but I was surprised to see it in a hospital in Doha as well! When I began my career as a Medical Representative, there were no such restrictions. We were welcomed according to the doctors’ preferences—some would meet us before or after consultations, others on specific days, and only a few required prior appointments. Usually, these meetings were walk-ins. Then, with the rise of corporate hospitals, policies began to change. They designated specific days for medical representatives to visit, which resulted in crowded corridors and made things challenging for both representatives and doctors. COVID brought even more changes and challenges. We started meeting doctors in parking lots, outside hospitals, and on sidewalks. Security personnel began scrutinizing anyone who looked like a medical representative. Even those in the “upper class” of medical device sales felt the impact. These restrictions are making it difficult for the industry to attract quality candidates, as many young professionals don’t want to feel restricted or prevented from doing their work effectively. Added to this are the challenges of constant travel between customer locations, dealing with traffic, and facing unpredictable weather conditions. I’d like to hear from young professionals in this field—how do you handle these restrictions, and what steps do you think companies could take to help you connect with customers with more dignity and ease?
