Congratulations to Hawaii’s 2024 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition (GAFC) Stage Two winner, XLR8HI. The winner is among forty-four accelerator partnerships which received between $50,000 and $150,000 each to advance their work supporting small businesses and startups in STEM and research and development (R&D) across priority areas like national and economic security, domestic manufacturing and production, and sustainability and biotechnology.  GAFC Stage One prizes emphasized ecosystem network building, while Stage Two efforts focus on the enhanced support that can be provided to small businesses and startups through these Growth Accelerator Partnerships. I was recently invited to join investors, partners and other stakeholders to celebrate the opening of Corryn Biotechnologies’ new offices and laboratories in Port Talbot. Corryn joined the British Design Fund portfolio in September 2024 – the first Welsh-based company to do so. As an emerging player in the field of regenerative medicine, Corryn has developed world-first wound dressing technology designed to painlessly cover chronic and complex wounds with an advanced “matrix” material, which reduces the time they take to heal. Corryn’s technology uses a handheld applicator device to produce the matrix directly onto the wound at the point of care, where it slowly breaks down over time and is absorbed by the body. This material works like a scaffold for new cells, encouraging them to grow through the wound more quickly and healing the wound much faster. Clever stuff.
