On the first five years after finishing your PhD. When you defend your dissertation, it is a mistake to think you have climbed your last academic mountain. In fact, you’ve only conquered your second. There are many more to come, publication, tenure, advising students, finding joy. To successfully climb those mountains, you need to carefully think about how you will invest the five years after graduation. In those years, you will learn to: * lead classes * advise students * publish papers * make your own academic friends * be a colleague While your #phd grants you entry into academic life, the next five years frame how you will live your academic life. As I entered the job market, my advisor told me that I had a choice - I could pick a famous school and sink or swim - or - I could pick a school with a mentor. He said both were viable models - but it was a lot easier to have a mentor. So, I took the second path. It was not easier, but it was navigable bc I benefited from in-discipline and out of discipline mentors. From my mentors, I learned that being a scholar was far more than writing papers - it was also about being a mentor - it was about being a steward for the field - and it was about proving to yourself that you belong. To realize those goals, they taught me to: * always be attentive to the discipline, and to give back. * take the time to do good work, there were no quick fixes. * put your students first, while at the school and after they graduate. * publish. Publish well. Publish often. * put family first. To the students on the job market, know that there are two paths - and while you can be successful following either - it is much simpler if you have a mentor to show you the way. And the lessons you learn in those first five years, will help you the rest of your academic life. #acDemiccareers

There is so much for #students to learn when they start at university, and many of these things aren't explicitly discussed in the classroom. That's why My Academic Family, CIC put together an #Encyclopedia of #University Terms. Each week we share information on different topics or covering different words that students are likely to encounter at some point during their university studies. These informational posts are geared towards helping students learn 'how to university' while reducing stress and anxiety and increasing student engagement, preparedness, and success. This week our highlighted term is on footnotes. I was fortunate that I went into university having already learned how to write a research paper, but I wasn't taught about the different citation styles that exist. It was only through trial and error and time that I discovered that footnotes are my personal preference for citations in academic writing. Having access to easy to digest explanations of different citation options early in my undergraduate studies would have been really useful to the development of my writing skill. Regardless of your struggles with academic, you can excel💯✅ Once upon a time, there was a student named Samuel who had always dreamed of academic success but struggled with laziness when it came to studying. Instead of focusing on his studies, Samuel often found himself wandering aimlessly 🚩with friends, engaging in activities that didn't contribute positively to his education. This lack of focus led to disappointing grades, including failing two courses in a particularly challenging semester. Feeling disheartened 😌 by his results, Samuel decided to make a change. 🌟 Embracing the Power of Teaching 🌟 In the realm of education, every journey is a story waiting to unfold. Recently, I had the privilege of guiding two cherished friends through a transformative experience in their 10th-grade math journey. Facing persistent challenges and scoring below 35 marks in every test, their academic path seemed daunting. However, in the days leading up to their final exams, we devoted a focused five hours to intensive tutoring sessions. The results were nothing short of remarkable. With newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of the subject, they achieved scores of 93 and 92 marks, respectively, in the public exam. As an educator, I always believed that genuine connection was the foundation of effective teaching.
