Recently had a 2nd Round interview scored with a non-profit org and conducted it in person, only to a find out a week afterward that the position was no longer a thing. My recruiter mentions they'll look into it; however, I mentioned to them that there's honestly no need to and we should just move on to the next opportunity. Sometimes you just have to accept that it is, what it is and keep pressing forward. Regardless of a company's perceived "values or core beliefs," in the end, it's all just business. Onto the next opportunity and opening. In the end, what's meant for you is meant for you. #opentowork #newopportunities

Pro Tip Look up who will be interviewing you on LinkedIn. Look at some of the content they have posted. This could help you understand what charities they are involved with. You might understand their leadership style. Make sure to look at the company's LinkedIn Business page as well. How the interview process is much like the major gift solicitation process: Getting back into the interview process after many years has been both challenging and rewarding. What I've realized is that I can tap into the art of storytelling that is central to major gift fundraising, to help me zone in on what I truly want to do most. Just like learning about a potential donor and understanding what’s important to them, interviews have become a way for me to see if the job and I are a good fit, aligning my goals with those of the organization. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve learned along the way. Every conversation has offered new insights, not just about the roles I’m pursuing but also about myself and the changing landscape of my profession. It’s been a great opportunity to reflect on how my journey has shaped who I am today. Most of all, I’m enjoying the process. Reengaging with interviewing has enforced my enthusiasm for major gift fundraising and the impact I want to make. I see so many LinkedIn profiles that just list org name and job title. Whether you're in an active job search or just open to exploring new roles, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is updated and contains detailed accomplishments and experience. Recruiters are searching for keywords that extend beyond job title. I will be posting my suggestions by functional area over the coming weeks. I'm starting here with fundraising: - Amounts successfully secured annually - Individual gift size (i.e., 5-figure, 6 figure, 7-figure) - Funding sources (i.e., individuals, major gifts, grants, foundation, etc...) - Management experience, including team size - Specific fundraising experience (i.e., capital campaigns, events, etc...) - Sector experience (i.e., social services, performing arts, etc...) - CRM experience (i.e., Raiser's Edge, etc...) #fundraising #nonprofit #nonprofitjobs #recruiting

Looking for a New Role? Don't Forget to Give Back Many say that after a layoff, your job search should become your full-time job. While I haven't entirely subscribed to that notion, I do spend part of most days searching, researching, and networking for my next opportunity. However, I've also dedicated time to volunteering for two fabulous organizations. These experiences offer fulfillment, provide a much-needed distraction, and open up different networking avenues. Reconnecting with a School Community For years, I've volunteered at my children's independent school. With the school's 30th anniversary approaching, I've taken on chairing the fundraising auction one last time. This role has allowed me to: - Reconnect with alumni and their parents - Meet newer community members - Revitalize long-standing relationships The outpouring of support, empathy, and offers to help with my job search have been overwhelming. It's a reminder of the power of community during challenging times. Embracing New Experiences in Nature A different opportunity arose when my youngest needed to complete a community service project. His desire to work outdoors led us to a local land conservation organization and what started as a family project has become a personal commitment. Now, I regularly join the "Fridays in the Forest" initiative, where I: - Contribute to protecting over 16,000 acres from development - Engage in physical outdoor work - Connect with like-minded individuals This experience provides a sense of accomplishment and aligns with my values, offering a refreshing contrast to the job search process. The Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering Thinking outside the box and finding ways to expand your reach can provide that positive boost needed to persevere in your job search. Volunteering not only feels good but can also lead to unexpected opportunities. After all, the person working beside you today could be your next colleague or manager. Remember, taking time to give back always feels rewarding, but there's something particularly meaningful about helping others when you're in need yourself. It's a reminder of our interconnectedness and the value we can bring to our communities, regardless of our employment status. Fundraising recruitment is often tricky and, in my experience, finding great legacy fundraisers is like searching for a needle in a haystack - it's a niche within a niche! So I wasn’t too surprised by the findings of this report. Landing that "perfect" candidate can feel like a real challenge (in part, potentially because of the desire to find perfection...). Whether it’s legacy, digital, community, philanthropy or leadership roles - you name it, every fundraising channel has it's nuances and difficulties when it comes to recruitment.
