A damaged recoater blade or roller can spell disaster in laser powder bed fusion, but not if the machine is also equipped with Electroplaning. This technology developed by Powder Motion Labs involves passing an electrode over the surface of the powder bed to level and compact the material. The method uses electrostatic forces to manipulate the powder particles, so the hardware is not directly touching the powder (or any rogue parts that might be sticking out of it). As you can see in this demo from IMTS - International Manufacturing Technology Show, Electroplaning can quickly correct flaws in the powder bed, so printing can carry on. The Electroplaning technology can be used as the recoater in printers where material is provided from above, or in conjunction with the existing recoater for printers where the powder supply is next to the print bed. If we talk about the complexity and differences between process printing vs vignette printing in terms of dot reproduction, vignettes in certain designs can be way more challenging for printers than process printing, which can be a lot more forgiving, the real challenge and differences is that vignettes require good solid coverage at the 100% and maintain good dot reproduction to the step down gradients at smaller percentage dots.
