Every in-person event should increase their prices 800% in the 2-week period before their event starts. And in the 4-week period? At least 200%. Why? Because 10%, 20% price increases after the early bird or regular rate ends do not work. Let's face it. Early bird rates DO NOT WORK anymore. This isn't 1993. People either register super-early or super-late. And I don't need to tell seasoned event pros that this wreaks havoc with your food & beverage numbers, your hotel blocks, seats in the room... Besides... the airlines do it. Uber, Lyft, and every cab company does this. Hotels aren't afraid to charge a premium for last-minute bookings. That emergency 2 AM plumber call is charging for coming out at the last possible moment. Why? Because they are all selling a finite resource. The closer you book to your departure time, the more you're going to pay. It is basic supply and demand. So why aren't we, as an industry, doing likewise? Early birds do not work. Little price increases (anything under 100%) do not work. Like Jonathan Kazarian said in his post this morning, "Attendees don't care about price when it's not their money." We need to stop being so worried that someone who *couldn't be bothered to register for six months* is suddenly faced with having to pay a premium for booking at the last possible second. Late registrations screw up everything. And it could mean more fees and monies paid out to our downstream partners (A/V, food and beverage, hotel, etc.). There need to be *REWARDS* for registering early, and *PENALTIES* for registering late.

How do you make your conference attendees feel special before they even check in? ✅ Last week I highlighted why you should trash the traditional event registration experience, which often leaves attendees feeling like cattle. 🗑️ How are we making this experience better for attendees (and less of a headache for organizers)? 👉 Set the tone for the entire event right from the start, with smooth arrivals and transportation to the venue (or at the very least, Uber codes). 👉 Have a hospitality lounge where your attendees can unwind without the hassle of traditional check-ins. 🍸 👉 Give your attendees the experience of bypassing the front desk, with their key and registration materials waiting for them at your lounge. 👉 Give your attendees a clear “user journey” right from the start. Where should they go after registration? How do they begin to meet people? Depending exclusively on a hotel shuttle for local transportation during conferences can be risky. 🚐 Recently, I had a client who promoted the free hotel shuttle for transfers to various locations for attendees. Shortly thereafter, we discovered the limitations of these radius transfers firsthand. While shuttles can be valuable, they often prioritize airport runs ✈ and bear the weight of the entire hotel's transportation needs and all guests staying with them . What we found was that a conference attendee request does not take priority in their eyes. 🚎 In one instance, attendees were left waiting at a restaurant post-dinner, only to be informed by the hotel shuttle that they would have to wait 60-90 minutes for a pickup just 2 miles away. This experience highlighted that while hotel shuttles are helpful, they may not always provide a reliable solution for conference transportation requirements.
