FIVE WAYS TO COMMEMORATE MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day is viewed as the official beginning of summer, marked by picnics and BBQs with friends and family. But this holiday was established to set aside time to honor and remember those who died while serving in the U.S. military. In addition to picnics and BBQs, here are five great ways to commemorate Memorial Day this weekend. 1. Attend A Ceremony. Many towns have parades and ceremonies on Memorial Day. Some even conclude with a memorial service. Make time to take advantage of what your town offers. 2. Decorate with Flags. For many years, it has been a tradition to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flags on Memorial Day or fly our flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. If you have a flag pole, consider joining the tradition this year. 3. Thank A Veteran. While Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring our fallen soldiers, it’s also a wonderful time to thank soldiers past and present who are in our midst today. Thank them for their service. If you do not know a veteran or want to do more, write a letter to a veteran or soldier! Check out https://buff.ly/2DhxLZD for more information about writing letters or sending care packages to soldiers currently deployed. 4. Participate in our National Moment of Remembrance. To ensure Memorial Day is the sacred and noble holiday it is intended to be, the National Moment of Remembrance asks us to pause for 1 minute in national unity wherever we are at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day. 5. Buy A Poppy. During the days leading up to Memorial Day, members of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) accept donations for poppies. The poppy’s significance to Memorial Day derives from John McCrae’s poem, “In Flanders Fields.” Disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals have been assembling Buddy Poppies since 1924. When you purchase a poppy, your donation assists in maintaining state and national rehabilitation and service programs for veterans. #EllenMorano #MemorialDay2024 #Honor #Remembrance #Veterans #FallenSoldiers #ThankYou

Good afternoon, everyone! I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that today is designated as Gold Star Spouses Day. Families who have lovingly supported their military members experience tragic loss when that family member dies. Gold Star Spouses Day was established to respect and acknowledge these wives and husbands who have lost their significant others during military service. How to Observe Gold Star Spouses Day Show some support and appreciation for the sacrifice that military families have made as they live their lives without a husband or wife who was killed in service. Get involved with observing Gold Star Spouses Day through some of these ideas: - Thank a Gold Star Spouse People inside and outside of the military can take time on this day to acknowledge and show appreciation to a wife or husband of someone who has died in military service to their country. Whether in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines, service members and their families can be recognized on Gold Star Spouse Day for their ultimate sacrifice. - Attend a Gold Star Spouse Event Many different military bases, veterans groups, and other support organizations may be hosting special events in honor of Gold Star Spouse Day. These might include remembrance ceremonies for those fallen service men and women, or some other type of commemoration service. This is also a good time for gold star family members to wear their gold star pins. - Make a Donation for Gold Star Spouses Those who are interested in getting involved with Gold Star Spouse Day may want to show some support for the cause by making a donation. The Gold Star Wives of America uses its status as a non-profit organization to preserve and enhance the benefits provided to the surviving spouses and children of US military members.
