The Power of a Good Foster Parent: A Personal Perspective As someone who grew up in foster care, I know first-hand the impact that the right—or wrong—caregiver can have on a young person's life. A good foster parent provides more than just shelter; they offer stability, guidance, and a sense of belonging during a time when everything else might feel uncertain. They can be the difference between a young person thriving or struggling, between feeling valued or feeling invisible. The need for compassionate, patient, and dedicated foster parents has never been greater. Many youth in foster care are dealing with trauma, uncertainty, and the loss of their familiar world. A kind and understanding caregiver can provide the steady presence that helps them rebuild trust and find hope for the future. I've seen both sides—those who treated foster care as a job and those who truly cared. It's the latter that made all the difference in my life. To those considering becoming foster parents, I urge you to step up. I'm proud of Houston for leading the way. Kelly Young & I sit on Midtown Management's Board together. We had a recent conversation about what Houston's unhoused population needs & it boils down to 3 things: 1️⃣ Affordable Housing - like REAL affordable housing 🏘 2️⃣ Getting Drug Dealers off the streets - they target the unhoused which makes getting them off the street EVEN harder. 3️⃣ Funding - we had a ton funding via COVID, but that's now GONE. It costs ~$1200/mo to house someone, there are less than 5,000 unhoused folks in HTX, that's ~$72M annually...That's NOT a huge number.
