I compulsively read every one of these climate science model articles; they are so interesting and obviously incredibly important given the climate challenges the world is facing. Our previous model FourCastNet (based on Fourier neural operators) could forecast weather to 25km resolution, but the new CorrDiff model uses diffusion to downscale from 25 to 2km accuracy... fine-grained enough to predict local damage to specific infrastructure. #ai #climate #nvidiaresearch

A University of Reading study published in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science highlights how AI-based weather forecasting can achieve the accuracy of traditional methods but with greater efficiency and lower costs. The research, focusing on Storm Ciarán from November 2023, revealed that while AI models could predict extreme weather events with notable accuracy, they tended to underestimate peak wind speeds. According to Professor Andrew Charlton-Perez, the study's lead, AI is rapidly transforming the field, delivering reliable 10-day global forecasts faster than ever.
