A lot of coaches talk about team spirit, cohesion, and togetherness, but what do you do to cultivate it?
I've been lucky with the Aztecs that most of the players to show up have been fundamentally decent people. But even with such luck, it still requires work;
- You have to get rid of bad eggs. Teams are destroyed from the inside if there is negativity and bitchiness. You need players looking forward to games and training, not dreading it. Some people just zap energy, and if you can't reason with them, you hsbr to get rid of them.
- You'll see flags at our games. We buy a flag, and keep it even after a player moves on, from every nationality to have represented us. It's a small gesture, but it shows we have an international family. It also makes our matches look like home, rather than some generic sports hall.
- We highlight goals, skills, saves etc. People like seeing themselves do well, and receiving praise. Our award-winning social media allows for our players to be appreciated by a wider audience.
- We laugh at our mistakes. I'm not a player anymore, but I did join in this game. In a 90 second clip, you'll spot a few of my mistakes. It promotes vulnerability. Everyone will make mistakes, it's how we learn, but you need to be vulnerable. Players will only allow themselves to feel vulnerable if they know it's safe for them to do so. Know that your teammates will make mistakes, and yourself too. Be at peace with that, and forgive them in advance.
- Red v Green. We like fun events like this. Just a get together, with fun being the priority. We're only humans, and life is short, so let's provoke as many smiles as we can.
Look, we take things very seriously. You have to if you want to compete at these levels. I think often people conflate fun with messing around. The most fun I've ever seen from a player was Ronaldinho. I was lucky enough to see him for AC Milan, Brazil, and then Queretaro. He put the ball in the net, he worked hard, and he always played with a smile on his face. Fun and serious are not opposites. It's serious because we enjoy it, and we enjoy it because we take it seriously.
Enjoy the men’s Red v Green highlights 🤩 excellent skills, saves, and goals from both teams, but the Greens take the trophy home 🏆
