Visited this country, Singapore almost few times every year. The multi racial culture, food, tradition and even street name have many similarity with Penang island of Malaysia where i'm from. Both cities were part of the Straits Settlement under British and we inherited many practices, system and governance from the British colonisation. In business, there are many local and multinational companies here that have their setup or factory in Penang. We share common pool of customers but in different specialisation. Many companies make Singapore as their regional hub for finance and marketing while Penang as their manufacturing centre. Many Singaporean or Penangites have their close blood relatives in either of these two cities. This is how the 2 cities are special. Aenon Solutions being a company start up and built its business in Penang Malaysia. Many of our clients have make Singapore as their strategic regional setup. Age is just a number... Many companies in Indonesia reluctantly hiring an applicant whose age is above 50 years old. (even more they deliberately put this matter into their job ad) It is the opposite situation in European countries, U.S.A, several South East Asia countries, and Australia, because they think everyone has the right to get a job and against the law. If they think: 1. The talent is not perfectly healthy...(Have they asked him/her to get a Medical Check up & see the results??) 2. The talent has an Old-Fashioned mindset and slow way of thinking...(Have they found out during the interview session & checked his qualification/capacity??) 3. The talent is expecting a "Sky High" salary & perks... (Have they asked him/after finish the assessment or interview session??) 4. The talent is willing to be placed in Operation/Guest Contact or Sales Dept who must be look 'Young & Fresh'...(Have they checked if they apply for an entry level position or middle/senior manager?? ; Have they checked his/her appearance during onsite interview??) During a recent Bosum class, I had a conversation with an Indonesian entrepreneur who was looking for an international candidate. The challenge? It's tough to find talent in Indonesia who not only understand Chinese culture but also have international exposure. Hence, he was looking to hire someone from Malaysia to take up the position in Indonesia. I gave him a heads up that doing so will cost him AT LEAST DOUBLE of his budget for salary. If the candidate is earning RM10,000 in Malaysia, he will have to offer the candidate RM20,000 to move to Indonesia, justifying by adding in additional considerations such as accommodation, kid's schooling, driver etc He was shocked, but this is the market practice. To attract talents to move abroad, you have to take into consideration their additional expenses and commitments, ensuring that you have an attractive package for the candidate to make this move and have a peace of mind where family is taken care of. As for talents, take this as an information to know the market practice and the value you hold.
