The ecohydraulic approach model, which articulates multitemporal geomorphology, hydrological and hydraulic models, urban planning and the ecosystem approach, generates as a result harmonious stormwater management and control works, materializing green corridors of life, which strengthen the genesis of the water cycle. This beautifies the natural architecture of the cities. A territorial planning process of which all municipal entities must be part, fulfilling their responsibilities aimed at improving the quality of life of inhabitants, mitigating disasters, and strengthening urban environmental conditions.

Terns Appreciate the Rubble.  With the end of MSC’s aerology program on Sable Island in 2019, the building housing the hydrogen generator and the balloon inflation room was no longer in use. During October 2023, the structure was demolished, and most materials were shipped off the island for disposal. Only the foundation - a concrete platform, as well as concrete blocks and chunks - was left at the site to reduce exposure of unvegetated sand surfaces and to provide enhanced nesting habitat for terns and petrels. Mission accomplished! The rubble is busy with terns nesting, chicks hiding, and adults standing about surveying their domain. And at night the calls of the gentle Leach’s Storm-petrels indicate they are in the area (although perhaps keeping clear of the terns). The large input of tern feces ensures that there will be a burst of enthusiastic vegetation growing in and around the site next summer. We’re thrilled to share that construction is underway on our crystallisers at the Mardie Salt and Potash Project!   🧂 What’s Happening? Our primary crystallisers - each spanning a massive 48 hectares - are critical to the salt-making process as they hold brine during the salt precipitation process, capturing and producing high-quality industrial salt. Once the salt is extracted, the waste brine is transferred to our KTMS crystallisers, covering 25 hectares each, to create KTMS salt.   🚧 Behind the Scenes - Perfecting Our Cell Floors: The process of preparing our crystalliser cell floors is no small feat. It’s not just about clearing land, building pond walls, and flooding with water. Here’s what goes into it: ➡ Surveying and Re-surveying: Due to its vast size, we first survey the land using LIDAR technology from a fixed-wing aircraft. The density of the mesquite vegetation also affects the accuracy of the LIDAR survey, requiring a post-clearing survey to validate the natural ground levels and confirm the design and associated earthworks are optimised accordingly. ➡ Mesquite clearing: Mesquite clearing and grubbing of vegetation is carefully undertaken in close coordination with Traditional Owners and fauna spotters. ➡ Precision Levelling: Our civil teams meticulously level and flatten the ground to eliminate any divots. Why? Because a flat surface ensures even evaporation giving a robust salt pavement for the harvesting equipment.   🚜 Construction Milestones: We’ve already completed earthworks on six of the 36 primary crystalliser cells, two of the secondary crystalliser cells and two of the 20 KTMS crystalliser cells. When new neighborhoods develop, we have a chance to treat our waterways better than they’ve been in the past. Even a small ephemeral first order stream holds value for flood conveyance, open space, water quality, ecology, and giving people access to nature in their own backyard.  In this example we are constructing a naturalized riffle-pool system that is intended to mimic natural stream processes in an urbanized setting. Because the hydrology will be very unnatural as the neighborhood builds out, we can’t rely upon the native stream bed materials to remain stable. The corridor width, plan form, slope, and cross section were geomorphically informed based on hydrology, geology, and topography.  The riffle material is comprised of imported void-filled riprap. But unlike riffles found in nature, the rock in these structures is not intended to move even in a 100-yr flood because there is no naturally occurring riffle material upstream that could move in as the stream shifts around.  As the neighborhood develops there will likely be a small base flow that will form to help support healthy native riparian vegetation. Until then we have plenty of revegetation work to do to help this corridor adapt to its new normal. #land #landdevelopment #urban #urbanization #landplanning #planning #urbanplanning #greeninfrastructure #greenway #nature #naturebasedsolutions #natureinthecity #water #construction #design #AEC #aecindustry #engineering #project #publicworks #floodcontrol #floodplainmanagement #flood #storm #stormwater #APWA #ACEC #ASFPM #CASFM #ASLA #AEC #ASCE #EWRI #NASFM #APA #milehighflooddistrict #milehighcity #colorado #project #floodprotection #stream #streamrestoration #river #riverrestoration #infrastructure #infrastructureprojects #civilengineering #civilengineer #cowx

Beyond construction sites, concrete is driving innovation that can protect marine life and coastal communities for future generations! Researchers at the University of Miami have developed a new kind of artificial reef called Seahives. These 18-foot-long, hexagonal-shaped hollow tubes are stacked in pyramid-like shapes on the seafloor just offshore. The perforated 2,500-pound concrete structures allow seawater to flow through them.
