Protecting children from the horrors of sexual exploitation is one hell of a challenge. Let’s discuss proportionate solutions.
The #ChatControl proposal undermines users' privacy and security that encryption – in particular end-to-end encryption – provides. As a father and tech-savvy marketer, I suggest pursuing alternative measures that balance safety with the fundamental right to #privacy.
💡 One such measure could be enhancing the collaboration between tech companies, legal guardians, and law enforcement. At this point, I'd like to take up a good idea from my dear former colleague Szilveszter Szebeni: He proposed the introduction of chat access management, including admin rights for legal guardians.
Imho, the most effective functions regarding this measure would be:
☑ Access controls
Dedicated access controls would enable guardians to individually assign user authorisations for joining, posting, deleting, etc. and thus prevent dubious accounts from entering chats in the first place.
☑ Monitoring
Logging user activity would make it possible to effectively control access to confidential communication and ensure data security, especially for chats involving minors.
☑ Reporting
In case of a detected suspicious account activity, guardians should have a direct reporting opportunity engaging either the service provider or the local authority in charge.
What's more, investing in public awareness and education campaigns is crucial. Online communities, the younger generation in particular, can be powerful allies in identifying and reporting suspicious behavior online in general.
❗Effective communication channels for this MUST be easy to find/use and accessible without barriers.
Unfortunately, I rarely see anything comparable online at the moment.
While the fight against CSE material is imperative, it mustn't come at the cost of a fundamental right, that is, our privacy. By fostering collaboration, education, and innovative reporting mechanisms, I'm convinced we can protect our children AND our fundamental rights.
Thanks, Hanna Bozakov and the Tuta | Secure Email & Calendar team, for another great open letter initiative.
Let’s keep advocating for balanced solutions to ensure a safer, more inclusive digital future together ❣
Today the EU is voting on #chatcontrol - again!
We call on the 27 Justice and Home Affairs Ministers to defend encryption! 🔒 💪
Privacy is a human right and it's time politicians understand that.
