This article caught my attention over the weekend and left me reflecting on the evolving role of GCs—a topic I find hugely fascinating. Thank you to Terra Potter for this thought-provoking piece. Sharing it here to spark a conversation and hear your thoughts on Terra’s perspective.The article highlights the challenges GCs face in maintaining their place at the executive table, with reporting lines increasingly shifting away from the CEO. Are these trends a sign that the role of the GC is being redefined, or do they reflect broader changes in corporate leadership dynamics? Do GCs even want roles on boards? I also came across some interesting studies showing that while 28% of GCs currently sit on company boards, their representation remains modest. For example, the U.S. Spencer Stuart Board Index reports that of the 413 new board members hired by S&P 500 companies, only 10 had legal backgrounds.
