Warum releasen wir bei Operaton immer noch Beta Releases, wenn wir doch "einfach nur" ein bestehendes Repository geforkt haben? Die kurze Antwort: Weil wir Code aus Trademark-Gründen anpassen mussten, einige Integrationstests aus dem Upstream Repository nicht von jedem ausführbar waren und wir die Software erst als stabil betrachten, wenn alle Integrationstests wieder funktionieren – und von jedem zur Verifikation ausgeführt werden können. Damit vermeiden wir nicht nur eventuelle Bugs, sondern sind uns auch sicher, dass wir nicht nach dem Release einer "1.0.0" Version noch breaking changes in der API einbauen müssen, welche dann zu Lasten der User gehen und dort unnötige Aufwände verursachen.

Here’s why: 🛠️ Heavy Refactoring To ensure that Operaton is truly open and community-driven, we’ve been working hard to remove trademarks and clear up licensing concerns. This wasn’t just a cosmetic change—it meant modifying the codebase to remove trademarks, which introduced potential risks and errors we now need to test against thoroughly. Most importantly, we want to ensure there are no breaking changes in the Java API after our first final release. This commitment to stability is why we’re being extra cautious. ⚙️ Modernizing for the Future We’ve decided to drop compatibility with outdated Java and Spring versions. Why? Supporting legacy tech slows us down and holds the community back. By focusing on supported versions, we ensure a future-proof foundation for your BPMN needs. 🧪 Testing Challenges Integration tests are essential for ensuring stable releases, but we faced a challenge: some of our tests relied on a non-open Jenkins pipeline and non-public Docker images. To uphold our commitment to openness, we’re transitioning these tests to public infrastructure. This change will allow everyone—not just us—to run and verify them, fostering greater transparency and collaboration. ✅ Stability, Thanks to the Community Thanks to support from early adopters within our community, we're confident in the stability of Operaton. But "pretty sure" isn't good enough. That’s why we’re committed to rigorous testing and verification to ensure our first stable release is rock-solid and ready for everyone. 🔜 What’s Next? We’re working hard to: -> Port all integration tests to public infrastructure. -> Provide various distributions as docker images, making it easier for users to test and integrate Operaton. Once we’ve completed these steps, you’ll hear about our first stable release—one that’s tested, verified, and truly open for the community.
