#Event2024 #IndustryEngagement I 👉 EMBRC’s Technology Webinar : Sustainable Aquaculture 🙏 Thanks to everyone who attended our recent aquaculture webinar and thank you to Vincent Vermeylen (an EMBRC Belgium researcher at the Lab of Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Center in the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering UGent, Universiteit Gent) for his valuable insights. 👉 We’ve learned about how ARC is encompassing sustainable aquaculture practices in its lab work, from low-trophic aquaculture and wind farms in the North Sea, to land-based multi-species hatcheries, and the impact of alternative feed ingredients on shrimp performance. Thanks also to our Industrial Liaison Officer Mery Piña for moderating the session. This is the first in our series of webinars around the sustainable Blue Economy and how EMBRC supports research and innovation in this field. We hope you enjoyed this interesting talk. If you missed it, the webinar recording will be available shortly on our YouTube channel. Follow us to be notified when it goes live. We're dedicated to pushing the boundaries of aquaculture through innovative photoperiod systems. We're excited to spotlight groundbreaking scientific research from esteemed researchers whom we deeply admire. Recently, a study by Floriana Lai and colleagues shed light on the profound impact of freshwater history on the performance of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in seawater environments. Here are some key takeaways: Freshwater history plays a significant role in determining a fish's ability to adapt to seawater transfer. Smolts from Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) exhibit slower osmoregulatory adaptation compared to those from Flow-Through Systems (FTS). FTS and RAS smolts display distinct responses to seasonal changes in seawater conditions. RAS smolts demonstrate a reduced physiological response to seasonal seawater changes when compared to FTS counterparts. Additionally, the study highlights the critical influence of seawater temperature on fish performance within sea cages. This research underscores the importance of understanding the nuances of fish biology and environmental factors in optimizing aquaculture practices. At Bioled Photoperiod, we're committed to leveraging such insights to drive innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture industry. Stay tuned as we continue to explore new frontiers in photoperiod technology and beyond!

New tool being developed to validate sea lice dispersion models 📑 - Researchers in Scotland, Norway, and Faroes seek a more standardised approach. A consortium of researchers from Scotland, Norway and the Faroe Islands is working on a new benchmark testing tool that could help to better validate the predictions of the dispersion of sea lice in water and enhance fish health. The project, known as SAVED – Sustainable Aquaculture: Validating Ectoparasite Dispersal (Models) – recently received a funding boost from the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC). The aim is to create a new system to validate the results of existing dispersion models, used by salmon farmers, academics, and regulatory bodies. Project partners include the University of Strathclyde; salmon farmers Mowi Scotland, Scottish Sea Farms, and Bakkafrost Scotland; the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate; the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research; Faroes aquaculture research station Firum (formerly Fiskaaling); oceanographic data handler NW-Edge; and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), as an observer. Firum researchers Tróndur Kragesteen, Tróndur T. Johannesen, Sissal Vágsheyg Erenbjerg, Birgitta Andreasen and Gunnvør á Nordi are all participating on this project, on behalf of #Firum Aquaculture Research Center on the Faroe Islands. 👉🏻 Read more in the article on Firum's website here: https://lnkd.in/dK-DXU9M #Firum #Gransking #AquaCulture #Research #Vitantilvarandialing #FishFarmingExpert

🌊 ‘Open Ocean’ or ‘Exposed Ocean Aquaculture’? Which is better definition: classifying a sea farm based on its distance from the coast, or categorising it according to environmental factors such as currents, wave action, or wind? These are some of the questions that experts from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) have sought to answer. The goal: to adopt terminology that supports better planning, sustainability, and efficiency in aquaculture production. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/g7dCMAWe Tyler Sclodnick, Michael D. In a significant advancement for sustainable aquaculture, Watershed AC, Evogene, and Ben-Gurion University have received a second-year grant from Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) to continue their collaboration for improving crustacean traits using CRISPR gene-editing technology. Following a successful first year, in which the collaboration achieved a major milestone by successfully editing the giant freshwater prawn for a targeted trait, the partners will now focus on industrial scale-up of CRISPR technology for giant freshwater prawn and expansion of the application to additional crustaceans: white leg shrimp and red swamp crayfish. With Evogene’s GeneRator AI tech-engine, we look forward to advancing CRISPR technology to foster sustainable aquaculture!
