In celebration of International Volunteer Manager Day: Voluntary Service is fundamental to who we are at the Red Cross. Our history is witness to tens of thousands of Canadians who have lived out their sense of humanity through Canadian Red Cross programs that seek to prevent and alleviate human suffering. The Canadian Red Cross is honoured that so many individuals keep choosing our organization to give their time and talent, and to advance our work. But it’s not just luck; volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum. Leaders of volunteers hold many different titles. In my work at the CRC, I usually refer to them as volunteer supervisors. They are the folks who are coordinating both service delivery and volunteer experience that makes the Red Cross someplace where individuals feel fulfilled to give their time. They champion our organizations work, orient and train, cultivate connections between like minded people, troubleshoot issues, come up with creative accommodations when required, coach and appreciate the many humanitarians who give their time freely amongst our ranks. People management is a well recognized leadership skill, however it’s often attributed to the management of paid employees. Those of you who support volunteers regularly demonstrate a variety of people leadership skills within each of your programs, including adaptability and creativity as the world around us and the work itself changes. These efforts and specialized skills are why we celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMD) every year on November 5. In it’s 25th year of observation, the theme is “What’s Our Future Normal” – and well, my thoughts on that will require a whole new post. This one will be dedicated to all of the leaders of volunteers, paid and unpaid, within the Red Cross and in all the other organizations doing great work in our communities. Thank you for your big hearts and hard work! #IVMDay #LOVolunteers #IVMDay2024

International Volunteer Day, important insights and reflection towards professional growth On December 5th, we celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD), established by the UN in 1985 to honor the impact of volunteerism globally. Every three years, a report is released to explore the evolving role of volunteering in society. The next edition is set for 2025, and the most recent report highlighted these key insights: 🤝 Collaborative decisions: Volunteering helps people and authorities work together to solve important issues. 🤝 Shifting power: Volunteers can challenge and change unequal relationships between citizens and officials. 🤝 Participation opportunities: There are many ways to volunteer, but access isn't equal for everyone. 🤝 Building bridges: Volunteers connect service providers with those who need help, improving communication and teamwork! Volunteering is more than contributing to your community, it can also enhance your professional growth. Through volunteer work, you can cultivate valuable skills like empathy, teamwork, and leadership, which positively impact your workplace performance. Incorporating volunteering into your routine offers a fulfilling way to combine personal development with career advancement. 💙 #InternationalVolunteerDay #giveback

#CulturalCompetency is a vital competency in today’s interconnected world and its relevance becomes even more distinct in #volunteering as both potential benefits and risks are increasingly recognized. When I applied for a volunteer position at the Sumba Hospitality Foundation for my final internship at Hotelschool The Hague, I was eager to make an impact. Before leaving, I was sent a 30-page onboarding document. I skimmed through it, assuming I’d figure out the rest on arrival. What I didn’t realise at the time was how much vital information I had overlooked. The questions I asked and the mistakes I made could have been avoided if I had read it carefully. It turned out I wasn’t the only one. Many other volunteers also arrived unprepared, unknowingly repeating behaviours that clashed with local norms and expectations. This personal experience became the inspiration for my thesis, where I explored how to better prepare volunteers for cross-cultural collaboration. 🔍 Key Findings * Volunteering carries the potential for perpetuating stereotypical and faulty views of the world, where it is assumed that minority communities depend on individuals from the Western world to be ‘rescued’ or ‘saved’ * Many volunteers arrive in communities with limited cultural awareness, biases and self-serving motivations that unintentionally perpetuate stereotypes, cause tension or halt development progress. * Developing cultural competence is critical for volunteer work and requires intentional efforts such as extensive training, self-reflection and exposure to cultural differences. * Effective management and preparation of volunteers include careful skill-to-role matching, local community involvement in program design and providing pre-departure training to address motivations, biases and cultural assumptions. * Proper onboarding and training programs can transform ideas about volunteering from “helping” into “mutual learning”, fostering more meaningful and impactful experiences for both volunteers and host communities. 💡 Why This Matters: In today’s globalized world, fostering cross-cultural understanding is essential. My research underscores how thoughtful preparation, including pre-departure training and self-reflection, can bridge gaps and reshape volunteering into a tool for equitable global interactions. 📈 Next Steps: The redesigned onboarding program I propose aims to equip volunteers with cultural knowledge and sensitivity and encourages self-awareness of assumptions and biases to eventually ensure more respectful, collaborative relationships with host communities. 💬 What’s your take? Have you had similar experiences with voluntourism or cultural exchange? How do you think volunteers can better prepare for their roles abroad? Let’s start a conversation about making volunteering more considerate and impactful!

Are you looking to advance/change your career? Often as a professional looking for career advancement, your employer might not offer you the capacity to develop critical skills. If you are faced with this obstacle let me share what assisted me to have a career leap. Firstly, know this, "a closed mouth doesn't get fed". If you're looking for development communicate your needs with your manager and across departments. After exhausting your efforts internally seek external opportunities. What worked for me was aligning my efforts with NPOs, numerous nonprofit organizations across the country offer rewarding volunteer opportunities. However, it's important to choose organizations that are well-equipped to manage volunteer projects effectively. Keep in mind that volunteering has legal implications, so it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the relevant laws before getting involved. Volunteering for nonprofit organizations (NPOs) is a powerful way to boost your career development. It provides hands-on experience, allowing you to build and refine skills that are highly valued in the workplace, such as leadership, teamwork, and project management. By volunteering, you expand your professional network, connect with like-minded individuals, and open doors to potential job opportunities. Additionally, it demonstrates your commitment to social causes, which can make you a more attractive candidate to employers. Overall, volunteering not only enriches your personal growth but also enhances your professional journey. There are a number of platforms that align volunteers with NPOs that require your valuable skills. I used forgood, try them out and other similar platforms and make that career leap - https://lnkd.in/dCmer7NJ The opportunities are endless: Company Secretary Non-Executive director Chairperson Committee member #CSProfessionalsHub #CompanySecretary #GovernaceProfessionals

International Volunteer Managers Day - 5th November One of the topics for this year is “ Future volunteers their views and expectations”. As we look towards the future, it's important to understand the evolving perspectives of potential volunteers. Here's a glimpse into what they value: · Purposeful Impact: Future volunteers seek opportunities that align with their passions and make a tangible difference in the world. They want to feel their contributions matter. · Flexible Engagement: Traditional volunteering models may not fit everyone's lifestyle. Volunteers desire flexible options like remote work, virtual events, and micro-volunteering. · Skill Development: Volunteers want to grow both personally and professionally. They look for experiences that offer training, mentorship, and opportunities to learn new skills. · Recognition and Appreciation: Feeling valued and acknowledged is crucial. Volunteers appreciate public recognition, thank-you notes, and opportunities to connect with fellow volunteers. · Transparent Organisations: Future volunteers want to know where their time and energy are going. They seek organisations with clear missions, transparent operations, and a commitment to ethical practices. By understanding these evolving expectations, organisations can create more engaging and impactful volunteer experiences. #IVMD

I’ve volunteered at a crazy amount of events throughout my career. Here’s what I would do if I were a volunteer all over again ⬇️ The key to making the most of your time as a volunteer is by staying true to your values, morals and ensuring you get as much out of the experience as possible. We have all heard volunteering horror stories - anyone else just got flashbacks and the full body shudders? I’ve been part of 1000+ events where I’ve either hired volunteers, worked as one, or even attended events ran by volunteers. So if you are looking for advice as volunteer here is what I'd recommend: 1 - Don’t be afraid to ask questions about your role and what’s expected of you. 2 - Volunteering is a great opportunity, but you deserve time to recharge, so set boundaries. 3 - Get to know the people around you; connections made during events can last a lifetime. 4 - Every event is a chance to learn something new, take note of what you observe, and apply it to future opportunities. 5 - Step up and show initiative, but don’t overcommit yourself. 6 - Ask for feedback as it helps you improve and shows you’re committed to growth. This absolutely ensures that you don’t get exploited as a volunteer, you have the best time, gain valuable experience, and contribute to the event’s success. 🏳️ I have been waving the flag for International Volunteer Day all yesterday and will continue to do so, so please don’t be one of those organisers who forgets the importance of supporting and respecting your volunteers! #VolunteerAppreciation #EventVolunteers #RespectVolunteers #VolunteerLeadership #EventIndustry

Demonstrating the #impact of our work has always been important to us. We know it's also important to our clients, who need to communicate stories of the impact of this kind of work on participants, the business and to wider communities. Through our research studies over the year we identified and measured enduring positive impact in 7 different dimensions: 1️⃣ -Depth of learning (changing behaviours and attitudes) 2️⃣ -Breadth of learning (building global leadership competencies) 3️⃣ -Retention 4️⃣ -Employee engagement 5️⃣ -Connection to purpose 6️⃣ -Increasing Responsible Leadership 7️⃣ -Business Impact How many initiatives can achieve all of that? If you're curious to understand more, take a look using the link below...
💫 Story #2: Showing the Impact Did you know that 88% of employees that participated in an international corporate volunteer programme felt better able to deal with complexity when they returned from their assignments? Or that 77% of participating employees were inspired to take action to support their organisation’s role as a force for good in the world? It goes without saying that if you don’t measure the impact of the work you’re doing, you can’t prove its effectiveness or value. That’s why in 2014, we embarked on our first cross-company research study to understand how international corporate volunteer programmes impact participants and their companies. Since then, we’ve released 6 additional studies—including several benchmark reports for participating companies to use to improve performance. Do you need help making the case for corporate volunteering or service learning more broadly? Take a look at our data! https://lnkd.in/e6USE6r8 #20storiesfor20years #EWat20 #MeasuringImpact #ImpactAssessment #CorporateVolunteering
