“Could you spot the signs of type 1 diabetes in a child?” Every parent, teacher, and caregiver should know the warning signs of type 1 diabetes. It’s not caused by diet or lifestyle—it’s an autoimmune disease that can affect anyone, at any age. Yet too often, these subtle signs go unnoticed until a child’s health is in serious danger. In this video, I share the critical warning signs every parent should be aware of, including: • Excessive thirst • Frequent urination • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme fatigue • Behavioral changes Awareness is everything. Early recognition can prevent life-threatening complications like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and give children the best chance to thrive. This is personal for me, and I hope it resonates with you. If you learn something from this video, please share it with your network—it might just save a life. #Type1Diabetes #Awareness #Parenting #HealthAdvocacy #T1D

Imagine getting to know that your child has type 1 diabetes. A condition that has no known origin or cure. In simple terms, it means your body stops producing insulin, a hormone that regulates sugar levels in our body. For mothers (who often shoulder the caregiving load) it means a lot of fear while navigating the complex world of type 1 diabetes with its limited information, unhelpful stigma and stereotypes and a lack of social and emotional support. This translates to a learning curve of 10 to 12 months long before getting confident in your ability to take care of your child. We worked along with the Diabetes Research & Care Center on a program that slashed this timeline down to 3 months. How? By hitting those gaps head-on with social and behavioural change (SBC) strategies that WORK. SBC allows us to connect with people, understand their day-to-day realities, and figure out what truly matters to them. 💡 Want to know our SBC insights & how we used them to reduce the transition time? What do you wish you knew about type 1 diabetes before it impacted your life? I asked this question to myself and to other people in the type 1 diabetes community during last weekend's JDRF 1 walk in Fargo. Those responses helped me create this song. Thank you to everyone who participated And everyone who works hard to educate and advocate for those with type 1 diabetes. Prompt 1: What would you want to tell the family of a child who was recently diagnosed? What are some of the things you heard that were helpful to you? Prompt 2: What would you want to tell a child or adult who has just been diagnosed? How has your experience shaped you? Prompt 3: What do you want the world to know about type 1? How has your experience with it shifted the way you are in the world? Please leave a comment letting me know what you wished you had known before your life was impacted by this diagnosis. #Type1Diabetes #DiabetesAwareness #T1DCommunity #SongwritingProject #DiabetesLife #DiabeticWarrior #ParentingDiabetes #T1DStrong #LifeWithDiabetes #CollaborativeSongwriting #DiabetesSupport #InspirationThroughMusic #DiabeticVoices #T1DFamily #DiabetesStories JDRF International

Diabetes is often referred to as a "hidden disability," but it's time we bring it into the spotlight. While both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes require serious attention, Type 1 diabetes (T1D) deserves more media coverage due to its unique challenges. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that typically develops early in life. Unlike Type 2, which is often associated with lifestyle factors, T1D is not preventable and requires lifelong management with insulin. The daily reality for individuals with T1D includes constant blood sugar monitoring, insulin injections, and the risk of severe complications. Unfortunately, public understanding is limited, and misconceptions abound. By giving T1D more attention, we can foster greater empathy, support research for a cure, and improve the lives of those affected. Let’s ensure that diabetes is recognised for the serious health condition it is, and not just as a hidden challenge. #DiabetesAwareness #Type1Diabetes #InvisibleDisabilities #Healthcare #AutoimmuneDisease #ChronicIllness #PublicHealth #Advocacy Kate Beaulieu Janice Wright Strada Education Foundation Diabetes UK DiabetesPro
