We have published a new position paper: "Digital Business as a Field for Research and Education" by Thomas Hess, René Riedl & Luc Becker, from LMU Munich – Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria & Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. https://lnkd.in/dcRYBAk4 Digital technologies are sparking new business opportunities and pushing established companies to rethink and restructure their business models. While multiple academic research streams have explored the potential of digital technologies for business, the findings are scattered across different outlets and communities. What’s missing is a unified approach to bring these valuable insights together. In our latest position paper, the authors propose a comprehensive integration of these research streams under the concept of Digital Business, with Digital Innovations at its core. They present a framework that: - structures the field of Digital Business, - tracks its development, and - offers three key ideas for further integration of the field. The authors aim to create a solid conceptual foundation to guide research and education in Digital Business. #InformationSystems #DigitalBusiness #Digitalization #DigitalTransformation #DigitalInnovations #ElectronicBusiness #higherEducation

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ve successfully completed the PhD seminar on "Understanding Digital in Management and Innovation Research" at the University of Zurich. This seminar was a fantastic journey into the world of digital transformation, digital innovation, and the dark side of digital transformation. During the seminar, I had the opportunity to read and present several insightful research papers: Orlikowski & Scott (2008) on Sociomateriality, exploring the integration of technology, work, and organization. Garud & Kumaraswamy (1993) discuss the changing competitive dynamics in network industries through Sun Microsystems' open systems strategy. Thomas & Tee (2022) provided a systematic review of generativity. Hartmann & Henkel (2020) discuss the rise of corporate science in AI and data as a strategic resource. Lanzolla et al. (2020) analyze digital transformation and its emerging patterns. Barnett et al. (2020) examine the impact of the digital age on stakeholder influence. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn from Prof. Dr. Llewellyn Thomas from IESE Business School and Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze from the University of Zurich and engage with cutting-edge research that is pivotal in today’s digital age. I am looking forward to applying this knowledge in my future endeavors and contributing to the field of digital management and innovation. #DigitalTransformation #DigitalInnovation #BusinessAnalytics #UniversityOfZurich

🔴Academic Insights - Week 22: 7 Functions to Rule them All 🔴 This week features the following paper: 📃Title: Functions of innovation systems: A new approach for analysing technological change ✍ Authors: Marko Hekkert, Roald Suurs, Simona Negro, Prof. Dr. Stefan Kuhlmann, and Ruud Smits 📅Year of Publication: 2007 ❓What is this paper about: This paper presents seven functions of innovation systems which can be used to analyse technological change. 🔎Key insights: A innovation system comprises different components, such as actors, technologies, institutions, and it emphasises that innovations are the result of individual and collective action. Innovation processes happen in systems and their trajectory depend on the interaction between its different components. Examples for innovation systems would be the car and solar PV industry, which have their own actors, institutions, rule, processes, and so forth. Innovation systems can be analysed by so-called functions, which (i) make different systems comparable; (ii) allow for a more systematic mapping of its dynamics; and (iii) help in the formulation of policies. This paper proposes a set of seven different functions which can describe an innovation system: (i) entrepreneurial activities; (ii) knowledge development; (iii) knowledge differentiation through networks; (iv) guidance of the search; (v) market formation; (vi) resource mobilisation; and (vii) creation of legitimacy. There is a great overlap between the different functions and highly influence each-other. The authors suggest that common triggers for sustainable change dynamics in innovation systems come from the functions ‘guidance of the search’ and ‘creation of legitimacy’. 🧠What I find interesting: I think that these functions provide a great starting point for attempts to understand innovation and system change dynamics. I like how the authors built their arguments on systems thinking and feedback dynamics, which underlines the complexity of innovation processes. I highly appreciate that the authors critically reflect on the usage of their functional and mechanistic language and emphasise that much of our understanding depends on our position, context, and constructed reality. Which functions are you most interested in? Do you think that there are there could be other functions in an innovations system? The world of academic research is constantly churning out innovative ideas. But how often do these breakthroughs translate into real-world impact within corporations? The reality is, there's a significant gap between the controlled environments of research papers and the messy realities of business. Here are some of the key challenges I've encountered Research findings often lack scalability or consider limited variables. What works in a lab might not translate to a company's complex ecosystem. New approaches can be scary! Companies prioritize stability, and venturing into uncharted territory with untested methods can be a tough sell. Implementing new ideas requires buy-in from various stakeholders. Overcoming resistance and inertia within a large organization can be a slow process. Cutting-edge research often requires specialized tools or expertise. Corporations might not have the budget or bandwidth to invest in these initially. So, how do we bridge this gap between academia and action? Start small! Pilot programs or proof-of-concept studies can demonstrate the value of new ideas before full-scale adoption. Research proposals need to be framed with a clear ROI perspective for corporations. Highlighting the return on investment justifies the time and resources needed for implementation. Stronger partnerships between researchers and industry professionals can ensure research is more practical and tackles real business needs. Let's keep the conversation going! Have you encountered similar challenges implementing research at a corporate level? Share your experiences in the comments! #research #innovation #corporatestrategy #business #challenge

#DigitalTrust | 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗿𝗮 | Researchers at EPFL, led by Prof. Emeritus Matthias Finger and Melanie Kolbe-Guyot, PhD, have developed comprehensive recommendations for maintaining high-quality public service amidst digitalization and the rise of service platforms. This policy paper highlights the challenges posed by these new technologies and their potential impact on the quality of traditional physical services. The research emphasizes the importance of a unified strategy involving both cantonal and federal administrations to tackle these challenges. Key recommendations include creating a federal organizational unit responsible for digitalization policies, ensuring data sharing between private platforms and public services, negotiating fair profit-sharing to fund infrastructure, enforcing price transparency, and guaranteeing equal treatment of citizens. These pragmatic solutions aim to sustain the quality and accessibility of Swiss public services in the digital age, providing a crucial framework for policymakers and administrators. 👉 Learn more >> https://lnkd.in/g79qnEtN 🇨🇭 Follow #ScienceSwitzerland for the latest news and emerging trends on Swiss science, technology, education, and innovation >> swissinnovation.org Follow us >> Science-Switzerland #Science | #Education | #Research | #Innovation

Sustainability, artificial intelligence or product and process engineering – the aim of our doctoral program is to support young researchers in important future topics. Recently around 20 of them exchanged ideas at a marketplace event and I gladly took the opportunity to stop by. My conclusion: If we as an industrial company support them with our technological environment and our research network, everyone benefits: the young researchers because they can access important resources, German industry because applied research often results in very concrete added value and ultimately, of course, TRUMPF as a company because we can also learn from such important research results. Thank you very much for this and for the fascinating insights! #Science #Innovation #Research #IndustrialPromotion
