Improving company culture doesn't have to be painful, in fact it can be FUN and exciting. 1. Start recognizing people's performance, out loud. Shout out a new worker each month, create a recognition board, etc. 2. Change the language from you/me to WE. Whether you're talking to the team about their sales numbers, or the company plans for the future, use WE verbiage, always. 3. Start doing things together that are not work. Book an afternoon social event, invite the teams out to a park for some activities, host a family day with the teams and their families. 4. Include personal and professional updates and discussions in your one on one meetings. You cannot properly protect and take care of your workers if you only know them as an employee. 5. Be transparent, about everything. Including Management or Supervisor involvement in things, wins and losses, upcoming and exciting things, etc. 6. Ask for feedback, and mean it. Ask for feedback from your workers and use that feedback to cater better processes and systems. They will feel heard and seen and listened to - this will change everything. 7. Learn to be more understanding and empathetic with your workers. Allowing them fair accommodations for things like personal life needs and their wellness. 8. Celebrate! Celebrate! Celebrate! We are not just here to work our butts off and NOT enjoy the ride. Celebrate company wins, celebrate big new clients, celebrate engagements, and pregnancies, and weddings. Life is beautiful, share that. 9. Don't be afraid to discuss failures and mistakes. Showing your workers that you're not afraid to admit defeat and redirect, is crucial. This will build trust and improve teamwork. 10. Provide protection within the budget to take care of your workers. Think about things like safety costs, training costs, and additional budgetary allowances that you can include to enhance all of the above. Let me tell you about Andy, my postie since we moved into our house in Ayrshire 8 years ago, and how his story perfectly illustrates the impact of losing organisational 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦. 📮 . He’s the best postie. Always happy and cheery; stops for a chat; knocks on the door to hand-deliver parcels, instead of throwing them in the wood shed and putting a delivery slip through the door! . Andy told me how much he loved his job over nearly 30 years. Working in our rural community, he knows everyone, chats with customers, and felt he was delivering more than just mail – he was providing a vital community service. ❤️ . But things have changed dramatically: in recent years. Whenever he feels like having a moan, he describes how: ❌ He’s actively discouraged from chatting with customers – it takes too much time! ❌ His every movement is monitored and tracked ❌ Productivity metrics flash warning signals when running ‘behind’ ❌ The human element has been stripped away ❌ Profit is prioritised over public service . The final straw? When Andy's father passed away, he was initially refused time off to clear his father's room in the care home. 💔 . Simple Ways to Appreciate Your Team. Creating a workplace where people flourish and feel seen, valued, recognised and truly connected is not only for HR, but for everyone. Create a culture of appreciation in your teams and organisations: 👍Spot bonus: Give a one time bonus for exceptional work. We did it recently. 👍Team lunch: Organise a meal to celebrate an ongoing project or a big success 👍Autonomy: Show appreciation and trustworthiness by giving more freedom and responsibility to people. 👍Milestones: Call out and celebrate major hits and contracts, project completion and work anniversaries with small, meaningful gifts 👍Career growth: Support good work by offering to pay for courses to help employees grow more 👍Handwritten notes: Take time to send handwritten notes to acknowledge specific achievements and quality work 👍Time off: Reward quality service delivery and productivity by giving some time off, even if it's for a few hours 👍Offsite: Arrange team fun outings to strengthen interpersonal relationships and recognise great work 👍Nominations: Put employees forward for organisation-wide exceptional, excellent achievement awards 👍Flexibility: Create flexible working environment to show your trust and appreciation for your team and their wellbeing 👍Public shoutout: Openly appreciate people's good works and contributions during meetings 👍Acknowledge outstanding people on your social media platforms 👍Formal statements or programs: Encourage peer-to-peer shootouts, recognitions and awards like best team player, employee of the month... 👍Feedback: Listening to and implementing good ideas from employees is a good way to show appreciation for them 👍Personal Thanks: I recall telling my MD to include this in his routine and reach out to people to say thank you personally to them for a job well done. I urge all leaders and front-line managers, even peer-to-peer to cultivate an attitude of personal thanks to others for doing well.
