**Nigeria Project Update: Urban Water Sector Reform and Akure Water Supply & Sanitation Project - IPR March 2024 funded by the African Development Bank Group** It is important to highlight the need for the operation and maintenance of water infrastructure to assist the Ondo State Government in recovering revenue from water sales. This is essential for achieving a good return on investment, and loan repayment. Project Progress.................. We will continue to monitor the project update to ensure the adequate operation and maintenance of the installed infrastructure for optimum returns on investment. The development objective of the Urban Water Sector Reform and Akure Water Supply and Sanitation Project is to support reforms in Nigeria's urban water and sanitation sector and to increase access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene services for the residents of Akure City and its surrounding areas. This will be accomplished through financing: (i) the hard component, which includes investments to rehabilitate, upgrade, and expand water supply systems in Akure City and its surroundings (including Ondo City and the satellite towns of Idanre, Igbara Oke, Ilara Mokin, Ibule Soro, and Ipogun); (ii) the soft component, which involves establishing institutional arrangements to ensure the sustainability of water supply and sanitation (WSS) services in Ondo State, as well as strengthening the capacity of the Federal Government to facilitate urban WSS reforms and improve performance across the country. The project's theory of change aims to enhance the quality of life for residents of Akure City and its surroundings through resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. This will be achieved by:  (i) addressing the infrastructure deficits in WASH and  (ii) tackling the policy and institutional shortcomings that have hindered the Federal Government’s ability to improve access levels for decades. This includes supporting participating states in implementing necessary institutional reforms and strengthening their capacity to deliver sustainable WASH services. The funding is part of the “Improving Access and Strengthening Innovations for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene” initiative. It will focus on developing climate-resilient water supply infrastructure, upgrading sanitation and hygiene services and strengthening institutional capacity.

On 22 June 2024, Rand Water embarks on a 37-day maintenance regime that will see days-long water disruptions hitting parts of Gauteng on a set schedule. The taste of water shedding in Tshwane is already plaguing the residents due to the dire need for extensive proactive maintenance of South Africa's water infrastructure. This can only be achieved with the government and the private sector working together.   "Mergence Investment Managers (MIM) is the only asset manager with a stake in the two privately owned water concessions in South Africa, Siza Water in KwaZulu Natal and Silulumanzi in Limpopo, by means of a Public Private Partnership we have with SA Water Works (SAWW). Siza Water celebrated its 25th anniversary in March 2024 and the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo lauded the project which has recently received Green Drop certification and supplies free water daily to 450,000 customers, 300,000 of whom are served classified as indigent communities. It is no secret that “water-shedding” in parts of South Africa is looking increasingly likely. We commend the government on establishing the Water Partnership Office in the Development Bank of SA to bring together the Department of Water and Sanitation, National Treasury, other departments, and financiers to work together with municipalities on long-term solutions. On 12 June 2024, Ivory Coast's Council of Ministers passed a law ratifying a loan agreement worth around 34 million euros, while work was underway on the project to make water💧 drinkable from the Aghien lagoon, Ivory Coast's largest freshwater💦 reserve, located 73 km south-east of Abidjan. The agreement, signed on 11 April between the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and the Republic of Ivory Coast, will be used to "partially finance the project to supply drinking water to the city of Abidjan through the construction of a water treatment plant on the Aghien lagoon and an associated distribution network," according to the West African country's government. As a result, the project launched at the end of 2023 is set to receive a boost. The work carried out by Fluence Corporation is expected to produce an additional 150,000 m³ of drinking water🚰 per day, provide 10,000 m³ of additional storage capacity in the city of Abidjan, lay 21.6 km of drinking water supply and distribution pipes, and connect the treatment plant to the national power grid by building three 17.5 km medium-voltage power lines. The water💧 treatment scheme is as follows: "Bouaké Fofana, Ivory Coast's Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, said in February 2024 during an inspection visit to the works site that he was satisfied with the state of execution and progress of the physical works, which stood at around 95%. Overall, the 150,000 m³ produced daily by the drinking water🚰 plant will serve more than 2 million people in the district of Abidjan, particularly in the communes of Cocody, Bingerville, Abobo, Adjamé, Attecoubé, Yopougon and Plateau. In all, the project will require funding of over €213 million. The Aghien lagoon water table is currently used by nine drinking water💧 plants. They produce around 120 million m³ of water💧 each year, not including private boreholes.
