Rotors instead of sails! “Flettner rotors remain an attractive solution. As the wind flows around the revolving cylinders, the rotation creates an area of high air pressure on one side and lower pressure on the other. Thanks to a phenomenon known as the Magnus effect (which also helps spinning balls slice curved paths through the air), this pressure differential creates a force at right angles to the wind direction. On a horizontal aircraft wing, it generates lift. On a vertical rotor, it helps push a ship forward. The rotors can be turned at different speeds and in different directions allowing them to be “trimmed” to the prevailing wind conditions. 🌟Trim Tactics🌟 At Pantaenius, we're always looking for ways to enhance your time on the water. Our friends at boatfolk have put together an essential guide on how to properly trim your vessel's propeller - well worth reading! ✅Understand Trimming Basics Adjust the angle of the boat’s outboard motor or stern drive to change the propeller's depth and angle. Aim for a "sweet spot" characterised by smoother operation, reduced drag, and optimal speed. ☑️Start with the Motor Fully Down (Trimmed In) Begin with the motor or drive fully down, angling the propeller forward. This position is ideal for slow speeds, takeoff, and shallow waters. ✅Gradually Trim Up During Acceleration Increase throttle and gradually trim the motor up as the boat starts to plane. Look for the boat to lift slightly at the bow and gain speed. ☑️Find the Optimal Trim Position Continue adjusting the trim up until the boat runs smoothly and effortlessly. Signs of optimal trim: -Smooth ride with minimal spray. -Higher speed with less throttle input. -Steady course with minimal steering adjustments. ✅Avoid Over-Trimming If the bow starts to bounce (porpoise) or the propeller ventilates (sucks in air), trim down slightly to regain stability and control. ☑️Adjust for Changing Conditions Adjust trim for wind, waves, and load changes (passengers, gear). In choppy waters, trim the motor down slightly for better control and stability. ✅Practice and Patience Spend time on the water experimenting with different trim positions. Make small adjustments and observe the boat's reactions. ☑️Tips for Efficient Trimming Use the Trim Indicator: Utilize the trim gauge to replicate successful settings. Listen to the Engine: A smooth, consistent engine sound usually indicates proper trim. Observe Fuel Consumption: Efficient trim settings often lead to better fuel economy.
